Best time to visit Martinak State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly April to October, is the most popular window for RV camping at Martinak, with warm days ideal for paddling and fishing the Choptank. May, June, September, and early October offer the best balance of mild weather, lower humidity, and smaller crowds compared to mid-summer. July and August can be hot and humid with biting insects, so shaded sites and screened awnings help. Winter camping is limited, as Maryland state park campgrounds on the Eastern Shore typically operate on a seasonal schedule.

Things to do at Martinak State Park

  • Paddling the Choptank River Easy
    RV parking available

Paddlers can launch kayaks and canoes directly from the park to explore the upper Choptank River and Watts Creek. The calm, tidal water is beginner friendly and known for herons, osprey, and bald eagles. Trailer parking and a boat ramp are available on site.

  • Fishing and Crabbing
    RV parking available

The park offers shoreline fishing, a fishing pier, and a boat ramp on the tidal Choptank. Anglers target largemouth bass, white perch, catfish, and seasonal striped bass, while crabbing is popular in summer. A valid Maryland fishing license is required for anglers aged 16 and older.

  • Nature Trails Easy
    RV parking available

Several short, flat trails loop through loblolly pine and hardwood forest along the waterfront. They are well suited to an easy morning walk and connect the campground with picnic areas and the river. Sturdy shoes are enough, no technical gear required.

  • Picnicking and Day Use
    RV parking available

The park has shaded picnic areas, tables, grills, and a playground near the river, making it a practical stop for RV travelers touring the Eastern Shore. Pavilions can be reserved for larger groups through the Maryland State Parks system.

  • Birdwatching Easy
    RV parking available

Martinak is a productive birding spot along the Choptank, with bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, woodpeckers, and migrating songbirds. Spring and fall migration offer the widest variety of species. Bring binoculars and walk the shoreline trails at dawn for the best viewing.

  • Day Trip to Tuckahoe State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Tuckahoe State Park is a short drive west of Martinak and offers a lake, longer hiking trails, and additional paddling on Tuckahoe Creek. It makes an easy half-day outing from a Martinak RV basecamp. Parking areas accommodate standard tow vehicles and trucks.

  • Explore Historic Denton

The town of Denton sits just north of the park and features the Choptank River Heritage Center and the Museum of Rural Life. It is a convenient stop for supplies, dining, and a look at Eastern Shore history. Street parking is generally easy for tow vehicles, though large motorhomes should use lots on the edge of town.
