Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, offers the most comfortable weather for RV travel, with warm days ideal for boating, fishing, and canal-side walks. June through August brings peak greenery and the busiest campground weekends, while September and October deliver cooler nights, lighter crowds, and strong fall color along the Maumee River. Winter visits are possible for day use, but the campground typically closes and facilities are limited. Early spring can bring high, muddy river levels that affect boat ramps and low-lying trails.

The Maumee River at Mary Jane Thurston is a popular spot for boating, paddling, and fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, and catfish. Anglers can cast from shore or use the park's boat launch to reach deeper channels. A spacious ramp parking lot accommodates trucks with trailers and larger vehicles.
Walk a preserved section of the historic Miami and Erie Canal towpath that runs through the Grand Rapids area near the park. The flat, shaded trail follows the old canal bed and connects to interpretive sites in the village. It is a relaxed, family-friendly route suitable for most ages.
The park's North Turkeyfoot unit, across the river, offers quiet hiking trails through bottomland forest and along the riverbank. Trails are mostly flat with some soft surfaces that can be muddy after rain. Expect songbirds, deer, and waterfowl along the way.
The main day-use area features shaded picnic tables, shelters, and open lawn directly along the Maumee River. It is a convenient midday stop for RV travelers passing through northwest Ohio. Large pull-through parking areas make it accessible for bigger rigs.
The historic canal town of Grand Rapids sits just outside the park and offers shops, cafes, and restored canal-era buildings. It is an easy walk or short drive from the park's main entrance. The village hosts seasonal festivals tied to its canal heritage.
Just across the river, Providence Metropark offers rides on a mule-drawn canal boat and tours of a restored grist mill. It pairs naturally with a visit to Mary Jane Thurston for a half-day of canal history. Parking areas accommodate RVs and trailers.
The river corridor is part of a major migratory flyway and attracts herons, eagles, waterfowl, and warblers in spring and fall. Quiet early mornings from the riverbank or picnic areas are the best times to look and listen. Bring binoculars and a field guide.

Mary Jane Thurston State Park, OH, United States
The park sits along State Route 65 between Grand Rapids and Napoleon in northwest Ohio, roughly 30 miles southwest of Toledo (about a 40 minute drive) and about 130 miles northwest of Columbus (around two and a half hours). From the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90) or US 24, travelers can connect via US 6 and SR 65 to reach the main entrance; these are flat, rural highways with no major tunnels or mountain grades, making access straightforward for larger RVs. Drivers should watch for narrow two-lane bridges, small-town speed zones in Grand Rapids, and low-clearance areas on older side streets. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Toledo Express Airport, with Detroit Metropolitan Airport about 75 miles to the north as a larger alternative.
