Late June through August is the prime window, when Lake Superior beaches are swimmable, campgrounds are fully open, and daytime highs are comfortable. July and August see the biggest crowds and highest reservation demand, so mid-June and early September are good shoulder options with cooler nights and fewer campers. Fall color typically peaks in late September and early October in the Keweenaw. Winter brings heavy lake-effect snow that closes the modern campground, though the park remains open for day use.

The park features roughly two miles of sandy Lake Superior shoreline with a designated swim area near the day-use beach. Water temperatures stay cool even in summer, and sunsets over the lake are a signature attraction.
A short loop trail runs between Lake Superior and the smaller inland Bear Lake, passing mixed forest and wetland habitat. It is suitable for most visitors and makes a good leg-stretch from the campground.
A multi-use paved trail links McLain State Park toward Hancock and the broader Keweenaw trail network. Cyclists can ride directly from the campground without loading bikes back onto the RV.
Anglers fish Lake Superior for lake trout, salmon, and whitefish from the beach and nearby piers, while Bear Lake offers calmer warm-water fishing. A Michigan fishing license is required.
The Sand Hills Lighthouse and other Keweenaw lights are within driving distance of the park, while the Portage Lower Entrance Light can be seen from the beach area. The park itself sits near the Portage Canal entry, a historic maritime corridor.
Copper Harbor at the tip of the Keweenaw is roughly 60 miles north via US-41, with Brockway Mountain Drive offering panoramic Lake Superior views. The drive takes about 90 minutes each way from the park.
Calumet and nearby Quincy Mine near Hancock preserve the region's copper mining heritage through National Park Service heritage sites. Both are within a 30-minute drive and have designated visitor parking.
The west-facing Lake Superior beach is one of the most reliable sunset viewpoints on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Photographers can walk directly from campsites to the waterline.

McLain State Park, MI, United States
The park is about 9 miles northwest of Hancock via M-203, roughly a 15-minute drive, and about 14 miles (25 minutes) from Houghton. From Marquette it is roughly 110 miles (about 2 hours) west on US-41. RVers should note that US-41 and M-26 through the Keweenaw include rolling grades, winter snow routes, and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock, which has height clearance most standard RVs clear but should be verified. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX) in Hancock, with larger service at Sawyer International Airport (MQT) near Marquette.
