Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and active bird and wildflower displays along the millpond. April through early June and late September through October are especially pleasant for paddling and hiking. Summer brings warm, humid days, heavy mosquito activity in the swamp, and afternoon thunderstorms, so early starts are best. Winter is quiet and cool, with occasional freezes but generally drivable roads and open campground access.

Canoeing and kayaking the 760-acre millpond is the park's signature activity. Paddlers glide between bald cypress and tupelo gum trees draped in Spanish moss, with rental canoes available seasonally from the park. A trailered RV can usually park near the millpond launch area.
Lassiter Swamp is a remote, otherworldly blackwater swamp reached by paddling from the main millpond. Ancient, gnarled tupelo gums known locally as the Enchanted Forest draw experienced paddlers, though route-finding can be tricky in high water. Allow a full day for the round trip.
The Lassiter Trail is a primary land route at the park, tracing the edge of the millpond and swamp for several miles. Expect flat terrain, bottomland forest, and excellent birding, with boardwalks over wet sections. Trailhead parking accommodates most tow vehicles.
Merchants Millpond offers quiet freshwater fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and chain pickerel. A valid North Carolina fishing license is required, and bank access is available near the picnic and boat launch areas.
The park is a strong birding destination with herons, egrets, prothonotary warblers, wood ducks, and barred owls along the water. Visitors may also spot white-tailed deer, river otters, beavers, and alligators at the northern edge of their range. Early morning on the millpond offers the best viewing.
The family campground provides drive-in sites suitable for tents and smaller RVs, with a central restroom and hot showers. Sites are shaded by mature hardwoods, and the campground serves as a base for paddling, hiking, and nearby Historic Edenton day trips.
Shaded picnic areas near the main parking lot offer tables and grills with views over the cypress-lined pond. This is a good stop for a midday break between paddling and hiking. RV parking is available in the day-use lot.
We had the best family trip with Krystal’s RV, “Coach”! It was clean, comfortable, easy to drive and easy to communicate with the host if/when needed. Anything we could have possibly needed for the camping trip was already in the RV. She wrote out detailed instructions from start to finish on how to handle Coach the best way. Even a non experienced camper would feel comfortable doing it on their own. Thanks for thinking of everything and letting us use Coach for a great trip! :)

Merchants Millpond State Park, NC, United States
The park sits off US 158 near Gatesville in northeastern North Carolina, about 30 minutes southwest of Suffolk, Virginia, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Norfolk or Virginia Beach, and about 2 hours 30 minutes from Raleigh. Roads in the area are flat coastal-plain highways with no mountain passes, tunnels, or steep grades, so most RV classes can reach the park without issue. Drivers should watch for narrow rural two-lane roads, low-hanging tree branches on secondary routes, and limited turnaround space near trailheads. Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
