Late May through early October offers the most reliable RV weather, with warm days, open boat launches, and the full campground in operation. June and September are sweet spots for avoiding peak summer crowds and biting insects while still enjoying mild temperatures. Spring brings strong songbird and waterfowl migration but also river flooding that can close low-lying campsites. Fall delivers vivid bluff color along the Great River Road, though nights cool quickly into October.

Paddling the sloughs and side channels off the park's boat landing is the signature activity at Merrick. Calm, sheltered water makes it suitable for canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Wildlife sightings include great blue herons, egrets, and bald eagles.
The park is a popular fishing access point on the Upper Mississippi for walleye, sauger, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Shore anglers can fish directly from many campsites, and a boat ramp provides motorboat access. A fish-cleaning station is available on site.
Merrick's concrete boat ramp gives motorized access to Pool 5 of the Mississippi River. Cruisers can explore upstream toward Lock and Dam No. 4 or downstream toward Fountain City. Trailer parking is available near the ramp.
The Mississippi flyway brings high concentrations of waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors through the park. Bald eagles are commonly seen year-round, with the highest numbers in late fall and early spring near open water. Quiet morning paddles offer the best viewing.
A short interpretive trail loops through bottomland forest near the campground. It is a flat, easy walk suitable for most ages and a good way to stretch after a long drive. Expect mosquitoes in summer.
Wisconsin Highway 35, the Great River Road, runs right past the park and is a designated National Scenic Byway. Drivers can connect Merrick with viewpoints, river towns, and overlooks at Fountain City, Alma, and Trempealeau. Pull-offs accommodate smaller RVs and tow vehicles.
Perrot State Park, about 20 miles south near Trempealeau, offers bluff-top hiking with sweeping Mississippi River views from Brady's Bluff. It pairs well with a Merrick stay for RVers seeking more strenuous trails. Designated trailhead parking is available.

Merrick State Park, WI, United States
The park sits along Wisconsin Highway 35 about 6 miles north of Fountain City and roughly 30 miles north of La Crosse, a 40-minute drive. From Winona, Minnesota it is about 20 miles, and from Eau Claire it is roughly 75 miles or 90 minutes via US-10 and WI-35. Highway 35 is a winding two-lane road with low railroad underpasses, blind river-bluff curves, and limited shoulders, so larger Class A and fifth-wheel drivers should plan a steady pace and watch posted clearance signs. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is La Crosse Regional Airport (LSE).
