Best time to visit Mesa Verde National Park

Late May through early October offers the most complete experience, with all loop roads, Wetherill Mesa, and ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours typically running. Sites are very busy from June through early August, and Wetherill Mesa is closed from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Shoulder seasons in May and September bring cooler hiking weather and lighter crowds, though some tours and services may already be limited. Winter visits are quieter but expect snow, icy switchbacks, and reduced access beyond Chapin Mesa.

Things to do at Mesa Verde National Park

  • Cliff Palace Ranger-Guided Tour Moderate
    RV parking available

Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde and is accessible only via a ticketed ranger-guided tour. Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Spruce Tree House are among the largest and most impressive cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde, but they are atypical of alcove sites in general; most contain approximately ten rooms, but all three of these sites are much larger, with numerous rooms and kivas. Park at the Cliff Palace Overlook lot on Chapin Mesa. nps.gov/meve/learn/historyculture/cliff_palace.htm

  • Balcony House Ranger-Guided Tour Strenuous
    RV parking available

Balcony House is an adventurous ticketed tour that involves ladders, a tunnel, and stone steps. A visit to Balcony House is a 0.25-mile hike that requires walking down a 130-step metal staircase, climbing up one 32-foot ladder to enter, two small ladders, and 12 uneven stone steps within the site. Not recommended for visitors with mobility limitations or fear of heights. nps.gov/meve/learn/historyculture/cd_balcony_house.htm

  • Mesa Top Loop Road Easy
    RV parking available

Mesa Top Loop is a self-guided auto tour on Chapin Mesa that links mesa-top archeological sites with cliff dwelling overlooks. Along Mesa Top Loop Road, the mesa-top Sun Temple, which contemporary Pueblo Indians describe as a ceremonial space, is accessible by self-guided tour. Pullouts accommodate most RVs for short stops. nps.gov/articles/000/mesa-verde-national-park-colorado.htm

  • Long House Tour at Wetherill Mesa Moderate
    RV parking available

Long House is the second-largest cliff dwelling in the park and is reached via Wetherill Mesa. Long House, the largest cliff dwelling on Wetherill Mesa, requires a ticket for a ranger-guided tour. Wetherill Mesa offers a quieter, less structured experience than Chapin Mesa and can be explored on foot or by bicycle, with fewer services available, so visitors should come prepared with snacks, water, and sun protection. nps.gov/meve/learn/historyculture/cd_long_house.htm

  • Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum Easy
    RV parking available

The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum is the year-round hub for exhibits on Ancestral Pueblo culture and the park's research collection. In winter, the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum is the starting point for ranger-led and self-guided tours. Large parking area with pull-through space for most RVs. nps.gov/articles/000/mesa-verde-national-park-colorado.htm

  • Park Point Overlook Easy
    RV parking available

Park Point is the highest point in Mesa Verde and offers panoramic views across the Four Corners region. Driving into the park, Montezuma Valley, Park Point, and Geologic overlooks provide a good sense of the Mesa Verde landscape. A short paved walk leads from the parking area to the lookout. nps.gov/articles/000/mesa-verde-national-park-colorado.htm

  • Knife Edge Trail Easy
    RV parking available

Knife Edge Trail is a beginner-friendly hike along an old road grade with sunset views over Montezuma Valley. Knife Edge Trail is rated easy, runs 2 miles roundtrip with 60 feet of elevation change, and starts at Morefield Campground. Ideal for an evening stretch from the campground. home.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/hiking.htm

  • Far View Sites Complex Easy
    RV parking available

The Far View Sites are a cluster of mesa-top pueblo ruins reached by a short, mostly level walk. The Ancestral Pueblo people occupied and built upon the flat tops of the mesas throughout their time at Mesa Verde, and found them especially useful for farming, hunting, and gathering wild foods. Self-guided and centrally located between the entrance and Chapin Mesa. nps.gov/articles/000/mesa-verde-national-park-colorado.htm

How to get to Mesa Verde National Park

The park entrance is along Highway 160 between the towns of Mancos and Cortez, Colorado and about 35 miles west of Durango, Colorado. Once you enter the park, the first view of a cliff dwelling is 21 miles, approximately 45 minutes, along a steep, narrow, and winding road. RV drivers should expect sustained climbs, sharp curves, and exposed drop-offs on the entrance road, plan for slow speeds, and check brakes before descending. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO), with Cortez Municipal Airport offering limited regional service.
