Late May through early October is the prime window for RV travel, with warm days, cool mountain nights, and full access to the lake, swim beach, and trail network. Late May is an ideal time to head to the mountains to escape the summer heat and see a variety of neotropical migrants settling in to breed. Fall foliage peaks in October and brings crisp temperatures and smaller crowds. Winter transforms the park into a cross-country skiing destination, though campground facilities are generally closed and mountain roads can be icy.

The 13-acre mountain lake anchors the park with a designated swim beach and non-motorized boating. Rental kayaks are available on site for visitors who arrive without a boat. Parking near the beach and boat launch accommodates most tow vehicles.
The park offers 10 miles of mixed-use trails winding through hemlock groves and along mountain streams. Popular routes include the Green, Blue, and White trails, most looping from trailheads within walking distance of the campground.
This streamside path follows the old Turnpike road grade through rhododendron thickets along Poplar Lick Run. The stream side along Poplar Lick Run is dotted with rhododendrons, making this a rewarding seasonal walk. Trailhead parking is limited, so arrive early with larger rigs.
New Germany is one of western Maryland's premier spring birding destinations. The most sought after bird is the Blackburnian warbler, a mostly white- and black-streaked bird with a brilliant flame-colored throat and face. Visitors can also expect black-throated green warbler, black-throated blue warbler, ovenbird, Louisiana waterthrush, veery, red-breasted nuthatch, and rose-breasted grosbeak throughout the park. nps.gov/articles/000/witness-a-warbler-wonderland-at-new-germany-state-park.htm
The lake is stocked with trout and also supports bass and panfish, fishable from shore or small non-motorized boats. A valid Maryland fishing license and trout stamp are required for anglers 16 and older. The lake's outflow and nearby Savage River tributaries offer additional stream fishing.
The park is one of Maryland's best-known cross-country skiing venues when snow conditions allow. The internal trail system doubles as groomed ski routes in winter, and warming facilities may be available at the nature center on weekends. The campground is closed in winter, so plan a day trip from nearby lodging.
The park's nature center hosts ranger-guided tours and interpretive programs during the warm season. Exhibits focus on the Appalachian forest ecosystem, local wildlife, and the area's CCC-era history. The center sits near the main day-use parking area with easy RV access.

New Germany State Park, MD, United States
The park sits off Exit 24 of Interstate 68 near Grantsville in Garrett County, about 20 minutes east of Deep Creek Lake and roughly two and a half hours from both Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Washington, D.C. is approximately a three-hour drive east via I-270 and I-68. RV drivers should be ready for sustained mountain grades on I-68 over Big Savage Mountain and Keysers Ridge, and the final approach on New Germany Road is a narrow, twisting climb best taken slowly. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Pittsburgh International Airport, with Morgantown and Cumberland offering smaller regional options.
