Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the prime window for RV travel, with warm days, long daylight, and all campgrounds and river outfitters in full operation. October brings peak Appalachian fall color and the popular Bridge Day event, so reservations fill quickly. Shoulder months of April and November offer quieter campgrounds and cool hiking weather, but expect rain and the chance of frosty nights. Summer is humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
Cold with possible snow and ice on gorge roads.
Winter conditions; some trails and overlooks may be icy.
Wet, muddy trails; rising river levels.
Spring wildflowers; whitewater season begins.
Warm days, green forests, strong whitewater flows.
Humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
Peak summer; busy campgrounds and raft trips.
Hot and humid; lower river levels for calmer floats.
Pleasant temperatures; early fall color.
Peak foliage and Bridge Day crowds; book early.
Cool, quiet shoulder season; frosty nights.
Cold with snow possible; some facilities on reduced winter hours.
The Canyon Rim Visitor Center near Lansing is the main orientation stop and offers the most iconic view of the New River Gorge Bridge. A short boardwalk with staircases leads to upper and lower overlooks, and the large parking area accommodates RVs and tow vehicles. nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/canyon-rim-visitor-center.htm
Guided raft trips run the Lower Gorge's Class IV to V rapids and the milder Upper Gorge suitable for families. Outfitters in Fayetteville and Oak Hill provide shuttles, so RVers can park at base camps and join trips without driving narrow river roads.
Long Point Trail is a 3.2 mile round-trip hike to a rocky promontory with a head-on view of the New River Gorge Bridge. The trailhead off Newton Road has a gravel lot that fits smaller RVs and trailers. nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/long-point-trail.htm
Endless Wall is a 2.4 mile loop along the gorge rim with cliff-top views from Diamond Point. The Fern Creek trailhead parking lot is compact, so larger rigs should use the nearby Nuttall trailhead with more maneuvering room. nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/endless-wall-trail.htm
Grandview offers some of the highest and broadest views in the park, looking down onto a horseshoe bend of the New River. The main overlook has a large paved parking area well suited to RVs, plus easy rim trails and picnic sites. nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/grandview.htm
Sandstone Falls is the largest waterfall on the New River, spanning about 1,500 feet at the southern end of the park. A boardwalk from the parking area leads to viewing platforms, and RVs can park at the Sandstone Visitor Center just off I-64 before descending River Road. nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/sandstone-falls.htm
Thurmond is a preserved coal-era railroad town with an NPS visitor center in the former depot. The drive in is narrow and winding, so larger RVs are best left at Glen Jean or Fayetteville and visited by tow vehicle. nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/thurmond.htm
The gorge's sandstone cliffs are among the premier sport-climbing destinations in the eastern United States, with routes concentrated along Endless Wall and Bridge Buttress. Local guide services based in Fayetteville offer lessons and gear shuttles that work well for RV travelers.

New River Gorge National Park, WV, United States
The park straddles US-19 in southern West Virginia, with Fayetteville serving as the main northern gateway and Beckley about a 30 minute drive south via I-77/I-64. Charleston, WV is roughly an hour northwest and is the closest major city, while Washington, D.C. is around a 6 hour drive east. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Yeager Airport (CRW) in Charleston. RV drivers should watch for steep grades descending into the gorge on roads like Fayette Station Road, which has tight switchbacks and is not recommended for large motorhomes or trailers; stick to US-19 and the main park access roads.
