Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, offers the most reliable conditions for RV travel and trail use, with mild temperatures and long daylight hours. October brings peak foliage along the river corridor and is popular with cyclists and equestrians, so campgrounds fill quickly on weekends. Shoulder months like April and November can be pleasant but bring variable weather and cooler nights at higher elevations near Galax. Summer midday heat and humidity can be intense, so early-morning rides are recommended.
Cold, occasional snow; some campgrounds closed for the season
Cold with freeze-thaw cycles; limited campground services
Variable weather as camping season begins at most loops
Pleasant trail conditions; possible muddy sections after rain
Peak shoulder season, lush riverside scenery

Peak summer heat; campgrounds fill on weekends
Warm, humid, busy season for cyclists and paddlers
Cooler evenings, great riding weather
Peak fall foliage; reserve sites well ahead
Cool days, frosty nights; some loops closing for winter
Cold with occasional snow; many campground services reduced
The main activity at the park is cycling the hard-packed rail-trail that runs along the New River for roughly 57 miles. Grades are gentle throughout, making it suitable for families and hybrid or gravel bikes.
Foster Falls is the central hub of the park and includes a historic village, the Foster Falls Hotel, a livery, and direct river access. RV campers at Millrace can reach the area on foot or by bike.
Guided trail rides and horse boarding are offered at the Foster Falls equestrian area. The trail is officially designated for equestrian use along most of its length.
The New River parallels the trail and offers calm, Class I to II paddling suitable for canoes, kayaks, and tubes. Several put-ins and take-outs are accessible from trail parking areas.
The adjacent Shot Tower Historical State Park preserves an early 19th-century lead shot tower perched above the river. It connects directly to the New River Trail near Foster Falls.
The New River is known for smallmouth bass, muskie, walleye, and sunfish. A Virginia freshwater fishing license is required, and many trail access points provide easy bank fishing.
This northern section of the trail features quiet river scenery and the long Hiwassee Bridge over the New River. It is less crowded than the Foster Falls hub and is well suited to an out-and-back ride.
The RV was very nice and clean. Communication was good. Overall good experience.

What a fantastic experience for us first time RVers! Levi was so patient in explaining everything to us. He even made a special trip to help us out with something we didn't understand. The setup and pack up was easier than expected. The RV was just the right size for us. We look forward to doing this again!

New River Trail State Park, VA, United States
The trail's northern end near Pulaski sits just off Interstate 81 and is roughly 1 hour (about 55 miles) from Roanoke, Virginia. The southern access points at Galax and Fries are about 1.5 hours (around 80 miles) from Roanoke via I-81 and US-58, and approximately 2 hours (about 105 miles) from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. RV drivers should plan routes carefully: the Blue Ridge Parkway nearby has low clearances and length restrictions, and secondary roads into Foster Falls and Cliffview include narrow, winding sections with steep grades. Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) is the closest option for fly-and-rent travelers.
