Late May through early October is the best window, when the campground is open and the overlooks, picnic areas, and interpretive grounds are fully accessible. June and September offer mild days, cool nights, and lighter crowds, while July and August bring the warmest weather and the annual commemoration of the Battle of Newtown. Fall foliage in late September and early October is a highlight over the Chemung River valley. Winter closes the campground and many park services, so off-season visitors should plan for day use only.

The Sullivan Monument sits at the hilltop day-use area and marks the park's commemoration of the Battle of Newtown. Paved paths lead to sweeping overlooks of the Chemung River valley and the Southern Tier ridges. Parking at the summit picnic area can accommodate passenger vehicles and smaller RVs.
A walking route with interpretive signs explains troop positions and the Iroquois and Loyalist breastwork. Fighting behind a horseshoe shaped breastwork of cut logs on the morning of the battle, the Iroquois and Loyalists were overwhelmed by the larger American line and forced to retreat. The route is mostly level and suitable for casual history walks.
Reservable picnic pavilions sit on the ridgetop with long views over the valley. Tables, grills, and restrooms make it a convenient lunch stop for RV travelers exploring the Finger Lakes region. Shade and breezes are welcome on warm summer afternoons.
A seasonal campground on the summit offers basic tent and trailer sites near the monument and overlooks. The campground is open in the warm months and works best for smaller RVs given the steep access road. Amenities are rustic, with shared restrooms and no full hookups.
Elmira, just minutes downhill, is home to Mark Twain's grave at Woodlawn Cemetery and the Mark Twain Study at Elmira College. Combining a battlefield visit with Twain sites makes a full day of history. Ample street and lot parking in town accommodates tow vehicles; large rigs should stay at the park.
A scenic loop along NY 17/I-86 and county roads follows the Chemung River past Sullivan Campaign sites and into the Southern Finger Lakes. The route links Newtown Battlefield with Corning and Watkins Glen for multi-day RV itineraries. Good road surfaces and moderate grades make it easy to drive in most rigs.
Each August the park hosts programs marking the anniversary of the Battle of Newtown. The battle was part of the Continental Army's Sullivan Campaign, ordered by General George Washington, and fought during the American Revolution. British troops and their Native allies retreated from the region following their defeat on this frontier. Reenactors, talks, and interpretive stations are typically featured.

Joel was great to deal with. Rv was clean, and everything was in working condition and ready to go. Everything was as stated in the rental ad. 10/10 would rent again!

Newtown Battlefield State Park, NY, United States
The park sits on Sullivan Hill off Lower Harris Hill Road, reached from Exit 59 of Interstate 86 (NY Route 17) near Elmira, roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive from downtown Elmira. Binghamton is about an hour east via I-86, Corning is about 30 minutes west, and Ithaca is around 45 minutes north on NY Route 13. RV drivers should note the steep, winding park access road climbing to the summit picnic and camping area, where tight turns and grades favor shorter rigs; larger motorhomes should scout ahead. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Elmira Corning Regional Airport, with Greater Binghamton and Ithaca Tompkins as additional options.
