October through April is the prime window, with daytime highs in the 60s to 70s Fahrenheit, low humidity, and cool nights that make RV travel comfortable. Winter weekends and spring break fill quickly, so midweek stays and shoulder months like early November or late February offer quieter campgrounds. Summer brings highs in the 90s and afternoon monsoon thunderstorms from July into September, though early mornings are still pleasant for boating and fishing. Reservations are strongly recommended year round because the hookup sites are limited.

Patagonia Lake is a 265 acre reservoir stocked with bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and wintertime rainbow trout. Two paved boat ramps, a marina with rentals, and no horsepower restrictions make it a full-service boating lake. Anglers can fish from shore, pontoon, or the fishing pier near the campground.
This moderate loop crosses the creek below the dam and climbs into the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area. Hikers pass through cottonwood and mesquite bosque that is prime habitat for southeastern Arizona specialty birds. Trailhead parking near the visitor center accommodates most tow vehicles.
Ranger-led birding boat tours cruise the quiet upper arm of the lake during cooler months. Expect sightings of herons, kingfishers, vermilion flycatchers, and occasional elegant trogons in season. Tours depart from the marina and typically last about an hour.
A designated sandy swim beach sits near the day-use area and is roped off from boat traffic. It is a popular stop for families traveling by RV who want a quick lake dip without launching a boat. Restrooms, ramadas, and grills are nearby.
This short hike climbs a low ridge for panoramic views of the lake, dam, and the Patagonia Mountains beyond. The out and back route is well signed from the campground loops. It is a good sunrise or sunset walk for campers.
Remote coves along the lake shore can be reached by boat or kayak for quiet picnicking and primitive camping. Paddlers often spot great blue herons, coots, and turtles along the reed-lined banks. Rentals are available at the marina for visitors without their own boat.
Southern Santa Cruz County has very low light pollution, giving the park excellent night skies. Campers can step outside their rig and see the Milky Way on moonless nights. Rangers occasionally host astronomy programs at the amphitheater.
My experience renting James’ RV was stellar! Five of us took it to a music festival over the weekend, and the RV had everything we needed and more. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish, and the rig made the trip even more enjoyable. We made some great memories, and I would absolutely rent from James again in the future. Thanks again for letting us borrow your RV!

Patagonia Lake State Park, AZ, United States
The park sits off State Route 82 between Nogales and Patagonia, about 20 minutes from Nogales and roughly an hour (60 miles) south of Tucson via Interstate 10 and SR 83 or SR 82. Phoenix is about 200 miles and a three and a half to four hour drive. The access road from SR 82 descends roughly four miles to the lake on a paved but winding grade, so RVers should use lower gears and watch for sharp curves near the dam. The nearest major airport for fly and rent travelers is Tucson International Airport.
