Best time to visit Pearl Lake State Park

Late June through early September is the best window for RV travel to Pearl Lake, when access roads are clear of snow, the campground is fully open, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking and paddling. July and August bring warm days, cool nights, and peak demand, so reservations should be made well in advance. Early June and mid to late September are quieter shoulder periods, with cooler nights and a higher chance of rain or early snow at elevation. The park is generally not suited to winter RV camping, as the campground closes and the access road is not maintained for large vehicles in deep snow.

Things to do at Pearl Lake State Park

  • Fishing Pearl Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Pearl Lake is a quiet, wakeless reservoir best known for its trout fishery, including native cutthroat trout managed under special regulations. Anglers can fish from shore near the campground or launch small boats from the park's ramp. A valid Colorado fishing license is required.

  • Paddling and small boating Easy
    RV parking available

The lake's wakeless rules make it ideal for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and small electric or hand-powered boats. Calm mornings offer glassy water with views of the surrounding forested ridges. Launching is available near the day-use area.

  • Lakeshore and forest hiking Easy
    RV parking available

Short trails around the Pearl Lake area offer easy walks through aspen groves and conifer forest with lake views. Longer hikes can be accessed in the surrounding Routt National Forest, which borders the park. This area supports activities such as mountain biking, hiking, fishing, OHV riding, and various winter activities.

  • Day trip to Steamboat Lake State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Steamboat Lake State Park sits just a few miles north of Pearl Lake and offers a much larger reservoir with swim beach, marina, boat rentals, and more developed RV facilities. It is a natural companion day trip for Pearl Lake visitors. The drive between the two parks is short and scenic.

  • Hahns Peak area exploration Moderate
    RV parking available

The historic mining community of Hahns Peak Village and the prominent Hahns Peak summit lie a short drive from Pearl Lake. Visitors can explore the small village, view the peak, and access nearby national forest trailheads for hiking and mountain biking. RVers typically drive in, park, and explore on foot.

  • Wildlife viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The forests and wetlands around Pearl Lake support moose, elk, deer, beavers, and a variety of birds. Dawn and dusk near the lake and in nearby meadows are the best times for sightings. Visitors should keep a safe distance from moose, which are common in north Routt County.

  • Routt National Forest side trips Moderate

Pearl Lake is surrounded by Routt National Forest, giving RV travelers easy access to additional trailheads, dispersed recreation, and scenic drives. Popular recreation locations include Big Red Park, Crane Park, Elkhorn Mountain, Hahns Peak, Hinman Park, and Seedhouse. Road conditions vary, so check with the ranger district before taking large rigs onto forest roads.

How to get to Pearl Lake State Park

Pearl Lake State Park is reached via County Road 129 north from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, roughly 25 miles (about 45 minutes) to the Clark area, then a short paved and gravel county road to the park entrance. From Denver, plan on roughly 160 miles and a 3.5 to 4 hour drive via US 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass, a long, steep mountain grade that RV drivers should take slowly and descend in a low gear. There are no tunnels on the approach, but the final miles to the park include a narrower gravel section, so very large Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should scout before committing. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) in Hayden, about an hour away, with Denver International Airport as the larger alternative.
