Spring (March to May) and fall (October and November) are the most comfortable seasons for RV visits, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and active bird migration along the Atlantic Flyway. Summer (June through August) brings hot, humid weather, afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy insect activity in the swamp and pocosin habitats, so early mornings are best for hikes. Winter is quiet and cool, with excellent tundra swan and waterfowl viewing on Lake Phelps from December through February, though overnight temperatures can dip below freezing. Late summer and early fall also coincide with Atlantic hurricane season, so RVers should monitor coastal weather before arriving.

Lake Phelps is a shallow, naturally occurring lake that is popular for kayaking, canoeing, and small boat sailing. The clear water and low power-boat traffic make it well suited for beginner paddlers. A boat ramp and day-use area are located within the park near the main campground.
This flat, family-friendly trail leads through swamp forest to an elevated wooden platform with views over Moccasin Canal and the edge of Lake Phelps. The walk passes ancient cypress and gum trees typical of the pocosin ecosystem. Trailhead parking near the main park area accommodates standard vehicles and most RVs.
Bee Tree Overlook is a flat out-and-back hike through hardwood bottomland to a wooden observation platform on Lake Phelps. The route is known for bird watching, especially during spring and fall migration. Expect wet conditions after rain.
Somerset Place is a preserved antebellum plantation located immediately adjacent to Pettigrew State Park. The site interprets the lives of the enslaved people who built and worked the plantation alongside the owner families, with guided tours of original and reconstructed buildings. Parking is shared with the state park area and suits RV day visits.
Lake Phelps supports largemouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, and catfish in clear, shallow water. A North Carolina fishing license is required, and anglers can launch from the park boat ramp or cast from the shoreline. Morning and evening are the most productive times in summer.
Pettigrew State Park is a notable stop on the Atlantic Flyway, with tundra swans, ducks, and geese arriving in large numbers during fall and winter. Year-round sightings include bald eagles, osprey, wading birds, and white-tailed deer. The observation decks along the lake trails are the best viewing points.
The Carriage Trail follows a historic route along the north shore of Lake Phelps between the park and the Somerset Place area. It is a long, flat walking and biking path through mature forest, ideal for a slower exploration of the park's cultural landscape. Start from the main park parking area.
