October through April offer the most pleasant camping conditions, with daytime temperatures between 65°F and 90°F and minimal rainfall. Summer months are extremely hot, often exceeding 110°F, and thunderstorms can cause flash flooding in washes and brief road closures. Shoulder months of March and April bring wildflower blooms and migratory waterfowl, while fall offers cooling temperatures and good water conditions for boating.

The Colorado River is navigable for powerboats, canoes, kayaks, and jet skis. Visitors can explore 9 miles of scenic river frontage with views of desert canyons and volcanic formations. Water sports are popular activities throughout the open season.
This hiking trail leads to the remains of Picacho's historic gold mining settlement, including the stamp mill ruins. The moderate trail provides views of the Colorado River and volcanic terrain. Trailhead parking is available near the main campground.
The Colorado River supports a population of largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish accessible to anglers from shore and boat. A valid California fishing license is required, and specific state regulations apply. Fishing is productive year-round with different species active seasonally.
A scenic desert hike leads to a dry waterfall formation featuring striking red and yellow volcanic tuff. The trail offers views of desert canyons and geological formations typical of the lower Colorado River region. Parking and trailhead access are available from the park.
The park is home to bighorn sheep, wild burros, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, and numerous bird species including bald eagles, golden eagles, and migratory waterfowl. Spring and fall bring thousands of ducks, geese, ibis, and cormorants to the river corridor.
This easy trail follows a historic narrow gauge railroad bed through the desert. The trail offers a low-difficulty hiking experience with access to views of volcanic formations and the surrounding canyon landscape.

Picacho State Recreation Area, CA, United States
The park is located 25 miles north of Yuma, Arizona via Picacho Road. The route begins paved but transitions to 18 miles of dirt road that is passable for RVs and trailers under 35 feet and 30 feet respectively, though high-clearance vehicles are recommended for sand sections. The drive from Yuma or Winterhaven takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Travelers flying in typically use Yuma International Airport (YUM), which is 40 miles south of the park.
