Poe Paddy State Park, PA, United States
The park is reached via gravel and narrow paved mountain roads east of Coburn in Centre County, roughly 30 miles and about an hour from State College and about two and a half hours from Harrisburg. The final approach follows a single-lane road through Bald Eagle State Forest with tight turns, steep grades, and limited turnaround space, so larger RVs and trailers should plan the route carefully and avoid forest shortcuts. There are no tunnels with vehicle restrictions on the main approach, but cell service drops out well before the park. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is University Park Airport in State College, with Harrisburg International Airport as a larger alternative.
Late May through early October is the prime window, when the campground is open, forest roads are clear, and Penns Creek is at its best for fishing and tubing. The famous green drake mayfly hatch on Penns Creek typically draws anglers in late May and early June. September and early October offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fall foliage across the surrounding ridges. The park is closed to camping in the off-season, and the narrow mountain access roads can be slick or icy in winter.

Penns Creek flows through the park and is considered one of the top wild brown trout streams in the eastern United States. Anglers come for fly fishing, spin fishing, and the famous spring mayfly hatches. Parking is available near the campground day-use area.
The Poe Paddy Tunnel is a restored former railroad tunnel now used as a walking and biking passage along the Mid State Trail. The short, flat walk through the tunnel leads to a footbridge over Penns Creek and is suitable for most visitors. A flashlight is recommended.
Pennsylvania's longest backpacking trail passes directly through Poe Paddy State Park. Day hikers can follow it along Penns Creek for scenic out-and-back walks, while backpackers use the park as a trail access point. Terrain ranges from flat creekside paths to steep ridge climbs.
A roughly seven-mile trail links Poe Paddy State Park with neighboring Poe Valley State Park through Bald Eagle State Forest. The route follows ridges and hollows and is popular as a one-way hike with a car shuttle. Expect rocky footing typical of Pennsylvania ridge trails.
Penns Creek offers gentle float sections suitable for tubing and easy kayaking during summer water levels. The creek flows past rhododendron-lined banks and remote forest scenery. Water levels drop later in summer, so check conditions before launching.
The park offers a small rustic campground with tent and basic trailer sites set among trees along the creek. There are no hookups, but vault toilets and drinking water are available in season. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends and during the green drake hatch.
The surrounding Bald Eagle State Forest is home to white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. Quiet early-morning walks along the creek and forest roads offer the best chances for sightings. Bring binoculars and store food securely at camp.
Our host answered all of our questions and was incredibly flexible with drop-off and pick-up. The RV was as described and the cousins had a great time on our camping trip!

Rented for football weekend at Penn state. RV is showing its age, but very spacious and housed. 3 dads and 3 teenagers pretty comfortably.
