Late June through early September brings the warmest, driest weather and full access to campgrounds, trailheads, and the South Boundary Road. July and August are peak months for hiking, waterfall viewing, and Lake Superior beach days, so reservations fill quickly. Late September and early October offer vivid fall color across the hardwood canopy with thinner crowds, though nights turn cold. Spring is muddy and blackflies peak in late May and June, so shoulder-season RV trips are best planned for September.

The Escarpment Trail runs along the cliff edge above Lake of the Clouds, delivering some of the most iconic views in the Midwest. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, MI, United States
The park sits about 17 miles west of Ontonagon, Michigan, and roughly 55 miles (1.25 hours) west of Houghton via US-45 and M-64. From Marquette it is about 185 miles (3.5 hours) east via US-41 and M-28, and from Duluth, Minnesota, about 220 miles (4.5 hours) east. Roads are two-lane and rural, with no major tunnels or restrictive grades, but sections of South Boundary Road are narrow and winding, so large rigs should use caution near Lake of the Clouds. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX), with larger service from Sawyer International (MQT) in Marquette.
