The best months to visit are March through May and September through November, when daytime highs are comfortable for hiking and Oak Creek runs clear. Summer brings hot afternoons and monsoon thunderstorms from July into September, so early-morning visits are recommended. Winter is mild at the park's 3,900-foot elevation but can bring cold nights and occasional snow dustings on the red rocks. Spring wildflowers and fall cottonwood color along Oak Creek are highlights for RV travelers timing shoulder-season trips.

Eagle's Nest Loop is the highest trail in the park, climbing to a panoramic overlook of Oak Creek and Cathedral Rock. The 1.9-mile loop gains roughly 300 feet and connects to other park trails for longer outings. Trailhead parking is at the main visitor center lot.
The Kisva Trail follows Oak Creek through a shaded riparian corridor of sycamores and cottonwoods. It is a flat, family-friendly walk ideal for birding and photography, with several benches and creek access points. Connects to the House of Apache Fire and Eagle's Nest trails.
A short spur leads to the House of Apache Fire, a historic 1940s ranch house perched above Oak Creek that now serves as a cultural landmark. The interior is closed, but exterior viewing and interpretive signs tell the story of the property before it became a state park. The approach is easy walking from the Kisva Trail.
These connected loops climb above Oak Creek for wider views of the red rock formations to the north. The route samples pinyon-juniper habitat and passes interpretive stations on local geology and wildlife. Best hiked in cooler months or early morning.
Smoke Trail offers a gentle creekside walk with multiple viewpoints of Cathedral Rock reflected in Oak Creek. Portions are wheelchair accessible near the visitor center. A highlight for photographers visiting in late afternoon light.
Ranger-led bird walks, moon hikes, and nature programs run regularly at the park's environmental education center. These free programs depart from the visitor center and are well suited to RV travelers looking for an interpretive introduction to the Sedona ecosystem. The Lime Kiln Trail runs from Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood to Red Rock State Park in Sedona and is roughly 15 miles long. The trailhead inside Red Rock State Park suits long-distance hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians planning point-to-point trips through the Verde Valley. Arrange a shuttle, as it is one-way. azstateparks.com/dead-horse

Red Rock State Park, AZ, United States
The park sits about 6 miles southwest of Sedona via Lower Red Rock Loop Road off State Route 89A, roughly a 2-hour drive north of Phoenix on I-17 and about 50 minutes south of Flagstaff. RV drivers should avoid the narrow, winding SR 89A switchbacks through Oak Creek Canyon between Flagstaff and Sedona, and instead approach from the south via I-17 and SR 179. The access road into the park is paved but narrow with tight turns, so larger rigs should use the main day-use parking area and not attempt the lower loop. Flagstaff Pulliam Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor are the nearest fly-and-rent options.
