Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, is the best window for visiting Reed Island, when Columbia River water levels stabilize, daytime temperatures are mild, and paddling conditions are generally calmer. July and August offer the warmest, driest weather for beach use and overnight camping on the island. Shoulder months like May, June, and September bring fewer boaters and cooler nights, ideal for RV travelers staying at mainland campgrounds in the Gorge. Winter visits are possible but challenging due to cold rain, high river flows, and stronger east winds.
Cold, wet, and windy; island use very limited.
Frequent rain and high river flows.
Cool and showery; paddling conditions variable.
Spring transition; check river levels before crossing.
Good shoulder season for island visits.
Warm, mostly dry; pleasant paddling.
Peak season; hot afternoons and busy river.
Warmest, driest month for camping.
Great shoulder month, cool nights.
Rainy season returns; river currents rising.
Cold, wet, and windy; limited island use.
High water and stormy weather; island effectively off-season.
Reed Island offers rustic walk-in tent sites with vault toilets and no hookups, reached only by watercraft. Campers pack in water and supplies and pack out all trash. Sites are first-come, first-served.
Kayaking or canoeing from Washougal or Steamboat Landing is the most common way to reach the island. Plan for strong currents, boat wakes, and changeable wind in the Columbia River Gorge.
The island features sandy beaches and open meadows along the Columbia River. Visitors can wander the shore, swim in calm coves, and take in views of the Gorge and Mount Hood on clear days.
Reed Island is a quiet refuge for bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, and waterfowl that nest and feed along the Columbia. Deer and other small mammals are often spotted in the meadows.
Anglers target bass, walleye, sturgeon, and seasonal salmon and steelhead in the waters around the island. A current Washington fishing license and knowledge of Columbia River regulations are required.
Many RV travelers base at Beacon Rock State Park and drive west along SR 14 to reach Columbia River launches for Reed Island. Beacon Rock also offers hiking, climbing, and full RV campsites.
The drive along Washington SR 14 and Oregon's Historic Columbia River Highway passes waterfalls, viewpoints, and vineyards. RVers should check height and length limits on older Oregon-side segments before detouring.
Took the trailer out for a long holiday weekend. Torrey and Nick were super nice and helpful. We called with a few questions and they were helpful and got us up and running. Highly recommend!

Torrey and Nick are absolute stars. Their Jayco trailer is as advertised. Clean roomie and all the amenities that a family could want on their adventure. Drop off, pick up and use of the fifth wheel was simple and straightforward. Torrey was responsive with all questions and an absolute delight to work with. Would certainly use her services again.

Reed Island State Park, WA, United States
Reed Island lies in the Columbia River off the shore of Washougal, Washington, about a 25 to 30 minute drive (roughly 20 miles) east of Vancouver, Washington, and around 35 to 40 minutes from Portland, Oregon via Interstate 205 and State Route 14. There is no road or bridge to the island itself, so RV travelers park at mainland boat launches such as Port of Camas-Washougal or Steamboat Landing and paddle or boat across. RV drivers should note that SR 14 through the Columbia River Gorge includes tight curves, short tunnels, and occasional rockfall zones, so tall and long rigs should check clearance and weather advisories in advance. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Portland International Airport (PDX), about 30 minutes away by road.
