Best time to visit Ridgway State Park

Late May through September is the prime window, when all three campgrounds are fully open, the reservoir is warm enough for swimming and boating, and high-country roads into the San Juans are clear of snow. July and August bring peak crowds and warm, sunny days with afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Colorado high desert. Shoulder months of May and October offer quieter campgrounds, cooler temperatures, and fall color along the Uncompahgre River, though overnight freezes are possible. Winter visits are limited to day use and a small number of cold-weather sites, with snow and ice common at the park's elevation near 6,900 feet.

Things to do at Ridgway State Park

  • Boating and paddling on Ridgway Reservoir
    RV parking available

Ridgway Reservoir is the centerpiece of the park and supports motorboats, sailboats, kayaks, and stand up paddleboards. Two boat ramps provide lake access, and mandatory aquatic nuisance species inspections are required before launching.

  • Fishing below the dam at Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Easy
    RV parking available

Pa-Co-Chu-Puk offers tailwater fishing on the Uncompahgre River for rainbow and brown trout. Paved paths and accessible platforms make this one of the more RV-friendly angling spots in the park.

  • Swim Beach at Dutch Charlie Easy
    RV parking available

The designated swim beach offers a sandy shoreline, picnic shelters, and restrooms on the reservoir's east side. Large day-use lots nearby accommodate trucks, trailers, and smaller RVs.

  • Hiking the Uncompahgre Riverway Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Uncompahgre Riverway Trail connects the park's lower campground with the town of Ridgway along the river corridor. It is a mostly flat, family-friendly route with river and mountain views.

  • Mountain biking the Ridgway Trail System Moderate
    RV parking available

The BLM-managed Ridgway Trail System is located just outside of Ridgway, Colorado, directly adjacent to the state park, and encompasses over 20 miles of single track trails with excellent views of the Ridgway Reservoir and San Juan Mountains. The trails offer a range of experience levels, from beginner to intermediate to expert. blm.gov/visit/ridgway-trail-system

  • Day trip to Ouray and the Million Dollar Highway

The historic town of Ouray lies about 10 miles south on US 550 and offers hot springs, shops, and access to waterfalls. Large RVs should stage at the park and day-trip in a tow vehicle, as the highway south of Ouray has tight curves and steep drop-offs.

  • Wildlife viewing and birdwatching
    RV parking available

The park's mix of reservoir, riparian corridor, and sagebrush uplands attracts mule deer, elk, waterfowl, and raptors. Early morning along the riverway trail tends to be most productive.

How to get to Ridgway State Park

The park entrance sits on US Highway 550 about 4 miles north of the town of Ridgway, roughly 25 miles south of Montrose (about 30 minutes) and 35 miles north of Ouray. From Grand Junction the drive is approximately 90 miles, or around 2 hours, via US 50 and US 550. RV drivers should be ready for sustained mountain grades on US 550, and should avoid continuing south over Red Mountain Pass toward Silverton in large rigs due to narrow lanes, tight switchbacks, and no guardrails. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), about 25 miles north of the park.
