Late June through early September offers the warmest weather, full ferry service, and reliable swimming at the sand beach. May and early June are quieter with fewer bugs before peak mosquito season, though Lake Michigan water remains cold. September and early October bring fall color through the hardwood forest and lighter crowds, but ferry frequency decreases as the season winds down. Winter access is extremely limited because the passenger ferry does not operate once ice forms.

Pottawatomie Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Wisconsin and the centerpiece historical site on Rock Island. Volunteer docents offer free guided tours of the restored keeper's quarters during the summer season. The lighthouse sits at the north end of the island, reached by a roughly 1.2-mile walk from the ferry dock.
The massive stone boathouse is a Great Hall built from island limestone by Icelandic inventor Chester Thordarson in the early 1900s. Visitors can explore the interior to see carved Icelandic rune furniture and historical exhibits. The building sits right at the ferry landing and is fully accessible on foot.
The Thordarson Loop is a roughly 5.2-mile perimeter trail circling most of the island through mature hardwood forest and Lake Michigan bluffs. The route passes the lighthouse, remote primitive campsites, and multiple scenic overlooks. Expect a half-day hike with rolling terrain.
Rock Island has a long sand beach on its south shore near the ferry dock and main campground. Swimming, wading, and beach picnics are popular on warm summer afternoons, though Lake Michigan water stays cool. Restrooms and the picnic area are a short walk away.
Rock Island offers backpack and walk-in campsites a short hike from the ferry dock. Sites are primitive with fire rings and pit toilets, with drinking water available from hand pumps near the main campground. All gear must be carried on foot from the Karfi ferry.
Short interior trails lead to a small historic Native American and early settler cemetery and to viewpoints over Rock Island Passage. These flat, shaded paths are ideal for a relaxed afternoon after exploring the boathouse. Interpretive signs explain the island's long human history.
Before boarding the Karfi, RV travelers can explore Jackson Harbor Ridges State Natural Area on Washington Island, just steps from the ferry dock. The area features rare boreal plants, cobble beaches, and the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum. Parking lots near the harbor can accommodate RVs of moderate length.

Rock Island State Park, WI, United States
Reaching Rock Island requires two ferries. RV travelers drive to Northport Pier at the tip of Door County (about 90 minutes north of Green Bay and roughly 4.5 hours from Chicago or 4 hours from Minneapolis), board the Washington Island Ferry with their vehicle, cross Death's Door passage, then drive across Washington Island to Jackson Harbor and board the passenger-only Karfi ferry to Rock Island. RVs, trailers, and all wheeled vehicles must stay on Washington Island or the mainland, so plan to park the rig at a Washington Island campground or Door County park before the final ferry. The nearest commercial airport is Austin Straubel International in Green Bay, Wisconsin, making it a practical fly-and-rent option.
