Late June through early September offers the warmest weather, fully open campgrounds, lake swimming, and active marina services. Late May and September are good shoulder-season windows for RV travel with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and easier reservations. October brings Finger Lakes fall foliage and active harvest season at nearby wineries, though the campground typically closes by mid-October. The park's designated swimming beach on Seneca Lake is a central summer attraction. Lifeguards typically staff the beach in peak season, and the adjacent parking and picnic areas accommodate RV day-use visitors.
The on-site military museum preserves the history of the former Sampson Naval Training Station and Sampson Air Force Base. Exhibits cover WWII and Korean War training operations with outdoor displays accessible from the main park roads.
Sampson's marina offers slips, a launch ramp, and direct access to Seneca Lake for boating, fishing, and paddling. Trailer parking is available for RVers who bring a towable boat.
Seneca Lake is one of the premier lake trout and landlocked salmon fisheries in the eastern United States. Shore fishing is accessible from several spots in the park with a valid New York State fishing license.
The Seneca Lake Wine Trail loops the lake with dozens of wineries, cideries, and distilleries within a short drive of the park. The east-side stretch along Route 414 is particularly popular and easy to visit from Sampson.
Paved and gravel paths wind through the former military base grounds, offering easy walking and cycling with lake views. The flat terrain suits casual riders and families of all ages.
Watkins Glen State Park and its iconic Gorge Trail lie at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, roughly 30 miles south of Sampson. The park is an ideal day trip for campers seeking waterfalls and a short but scenic hike.
Tim was wonderful to work with. He had everything you could ask for. Towels, Sheets, Pillows, Blankets, even a Bean Bag. The RV felt like home.

Sampson State Park, NY, United States
The park is about a 1 hour drive southeast of Rochester and roughly 1 hour west of Syracuse via I-90 and NY Route 96A along the east side of Seneca Lake. Geneva lies about 15 miles to the north, and Ithaca is about 45 minutes to the southeast. Routes are generally flat to gently rolling with no significant mountain passes or low-clearance tunnels, making access straightforward for large RVs, though drivers should watch for two-lane country roads and small village speed zones on 96A. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Rochester (ROC) and Syracuse (SYR).
