Late May through September offers the most reliable RV-friendly conditions, with warm days, long daylight, and dry roads on the valley floor. July and August are peak for birdwatching around the lakes and for pairing a visit with Medano Creek at Great Sand Dunes. Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring strong winds and cold nights at 7,500 feet, so RVers should prepare for temperature swings. Winter access is limited by cold, snow, and wildlife closures in parts of the area.

San Luis Lake and the surrounding wetlands are a prime stop for migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors in the San Luis Valley. Pullouts and open shoreline allow easy scope and binocular viewing from near RV parking.
The shallow lakes are suited to canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards when water levels allow. Motorized boating is restricted, which keeps the lakes quiet and good for birding from the water.
Anglers fish San Luis Lake for species managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife under current regulations. A valid Colorado fishing license and SWA pass are required. cpw.state.co.us/
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is about 15 miles east and contains the tallest dunes in North America. RVers can drive over for dune hiking, Medano Creek wading in spring, and dark-sky stargazing. nps.gov/grsa/index.htm
Zapata Falls is a short but rocky hike to a slot canyon waterfall on BLM land south of Great Sand Dunes. The approach road is gravel and steep, so many RVers drive a tow vehicle rather than the motorhome to the trailhead. blm.gov/visit/zapata-falls-campground
The valley floor at the park offers long, open sightlines to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and San Juan peaks. Sunrise and sunset over the lakes produce strong reflections and alpenglow on the range.
The Blanca Wildlife Habitat Area south of San Luis Lakes covers nearly 10,000 acres of basins, salt flats, marshes, and ponds. It is one of Colorado's most important stopover sites for migrating waterbirds and shorebirds. blm.gov/visit/blanca-wetlands
