Best time to visit Sand Hills Beach Provincial Park

July and August are the prime window, when ocean temperatures along this stretch of the South Shore are at their warmest and beach days are reliable. June and early September offer a quieter shoulder season with fewer visitors, milder sun, and easier parking, which suits RV travelers who prefer space. Fog is common in spring and early summer, so afternoons often bring the clearest conditions. Off-season visits from late fall through winter are possible for walks, but facilities are minimal and exposed coastal winds can be strong.

Things to do at Sand Hills Beach Provincial Park

  • Walk the Sand Hills Beach Easy
    RV parking available

The main activity is walking the long sand beach that gives the park its name. The beach stretches along the Atlantic shore with dunes on one side and open surf on the other, ideal for low-impact strolls and shell collecting.

  • Ocean Swimming and Wading Easy
    RV parking available

Swim and wade in the Atlantic shallows during summer. Water here is warmer than many South Shore beaches because of the broad sandy bottom, though there are no lifeguards, so swim with caution.

  • Dune and Boardwalk Access Easy
    RV parking available

A short walking route crosses the dune system to reach the beach. Stay on marked paths to protect fragile dune grasses, which stabilize the shoreline and provide habitat for coastal wildlife.

  • Birdwatching Along the Shoreline Easy
    RV parking available

Watch for shorebirds, gulls, and seasonal migrants along the beach and adjacent salt marsh. Early morning and evening are the most productive times for wildlife viewing.

  • Beach Picnicking Easy
    RV parking available

Pack a picnic and enjoy open ocean views from the sand. The park is day-use only, so bring everything you need and pack out all waste.

  • Day Trip to Barrington and Cape Sable Island Easy
    RV parking available

Use the park as a stop on a wider South Shore loop. Nearby Barrington offers museums and the Old Meeting House, while Cape Sable Island adds lighthouses, fishing wharves, and additional beach access a short drive away.

  • Sunset Photography Easy
    RV parking available

Capture wide Atlantic sunsets from the open dune line. The low relief and long sightlines make this one of the more photogenic spots along this stretch of coast.

How to get to Sand Hills Beach Provincial Park

The park sits just off Route 3 near Villagedale, roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive from Barrington and about 30 minutes from the town of Shelburne. From Halifax, allow roughly 3 to 3.5 hours via Highway 103, and from Yarmouth about 1 hour via Highway 103 east. Roads in and around the park are paved and generally RV-friendly, but the final approach includes a narrow local road and a small gravel parking area, so large motorhomes and long trailers should scout turnaround space before committing. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ).
