Midsummer can be hot, humid, and buggy on the sandy trails, while late fall brings active hunting seasons that RVers should plan around. Sand Ridge offers more than 40 miles of multi-use trails winding through pine plantations and oak savanna. Sandy footing makes for a distinctive Midwest hiking experience. Trailheads have gravel parking suitable for trucks and tow vehicles.
The forest is one of central Illinois' premier equestrian destinations, with dedicated horse trails and a horse camp area. Riders share many of the same loops used by hikers. Large gravel lots accommodate trailers and dually trucks.
Campsites at Sand Ridge are rustic and set among pines, with vault toilets and hand-pump water. Sites work best for self-contained RVs, vans, and small trailers given the sandy terrain. No electric or sewer hookups are provided.
The forest is famous for native eastern prickly pear cactus growing on open sand prairie, alongside white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and songbirds. Interpretive signage highlights the unusual sand ecosystem. Pullouts along forest roads make casual viewing easy.
Regulated hunting for deer, turkey, squirrel, and other game is a major use of the forest under Illinois DNR rules. Seasons run primarily in fall and spring. Non-hunting visitors should wear blaze orange during firearm seasons.
Cyclists use the shared-use trail network through rolling sandy terrain and pine stands. Loose sand in some sections makes wider tires helpful. Staging is easy from the main trailhead parking areas.
Sand Ridge pairs well with nearby attractions including Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge and Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge along the Illinois River. Both offer birding and scenic drives suitable for RVs. Havana and Forest City provide fuel and basic supplies.
