    Sand Ridge offers more than 40 miles of multi-use trails winding through pine plantations and oak savanna. Sandy footing makes for a distinctive Midwest hiking experience. Trailheads have gravel parking suitable for trucks and tow vehicles.

    The forest is one of central Illinois' premier equestrian destinations, with dedicated horse trails and a horse camp area. Riders share many of the same loops used by hikers. Large gravel lots accommodate trailers and dually trucks.

    Campsites at Sand Ridge are rustic and set among pines, with vault toilets and hand-pump water. Sites work best for self-contained RVs, vans, and small trailers given the sandy terrain. No electric or sewer hookups are provided.

How to get to Sand Ridge State Forest

The forest lies near Forest City in Mason County, roughly 45 minutes southwest of Peoria and about 1 hour 15 minutes north of Springfield via IL-97 and IL-78. From Chicago the drive is approximately 3.5 hours via I-55 and IL-136. Access roads are rural two-lane highways with no tunnels or mountain grades, though some interior forest roads are narrow, sandy, or gravel and should be scouted before committing a large rig. The nearest airports for fly-and-rent trips are Peoria International (PIA) and Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield (SPI).
