Mid-July through late August offers the warmest ocean temperatures, the longest daylight hours, and the most reliable dry weather for beach days and dune walks. June and early September are pleasant shoulder options with fewer people, though black flies can be heavy in early summer and nights grow cool in September. The park operates on a seasonal schedule, so RV travelers should confirm campground opening and closing dates before booking a long drive to the coast.

The park's signature activity is walking the long white sand beaches that stretch along the Atlantic shoreline. Visitors can swim in protected coves on warm days, look for shells and sea glass, and enjoy views of offshore islands. Parking areas near the beaches accommodate day-use visitors.
Short walking routes and boardwalks lead from parking areas across vegetated dunes to the beaches. The walks are flat and family friendly and offer good opportunities to learn about coastal plants that stabilize the sand. Staying on marked paths helps protect fragile dune grasses.
Sandbanks provides habitat for shorebirds, seabirds, and migrating songbirds along the south coast. Early morning visits to the beaches and barrier ponds are productive for spotting gulls, terns, sandpipers, and the occasional bald eagle. Bring binoculars and a field guide for the best experience.
Day-use picnic areas near the beach give RV travelers a relaxed base for a meal with ocean views. Tables and vault toilets are available, and visitors should pack out all trash because services at the park are limited. Weather can change quickly on the coast, so bring layers.
Just outside the park, Burgeo is a traditional Newfoundland outport community with a small harbour, local shops, and fishing heritage. Visitors can learn about the area's history, pick up supplies, and watch fishing boats come and go. The town is also a gateway to boat tours of nearby islands.
The remote coastal setting provides dramatic photography opportunities at sunrise and sunset along the dunes and beach. On clear, dark nights the lack of light pollution makes for excellent stargazing. A tripod is helpful for long exposures in low light.
The drive to Sandbanks on Route 480, known locally as the Burgeo Road, is itself a highlight, crossing remote interior barrens with lakes, ponds, and frequent wildlife sightings. Pullouts along the route offer chances to stretch, take photos, and watch for moose and caribou. Drivers should travel cautiously and refuel before leaving the Trans-Canada Highway.

Sandbanks Provincial Park, NL, Canada
From the Trans-Canada Highway, turn south onto Route 480 near St. Fintan's and follow the Burgeo Road roughly 150 km to the park, a drive of about two hours with no services or fuel along the way. From Corner Brook the total drive is roughly 240 km, or about three hours, and from the Port aux Basques ferry terminal it is about 300 km, or four hours. Route 480 is paved but narrow with soft shoulders, frequent wildlife including moose and caribou, and exposed stretches where crosswinds can affect tall RVs, so drivers should travel in daylight and fuel up in advance. The closest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Deer Lake Regional Airport, roughly four hours north of Burgeo.
