Things to do at Schodack Island State Park

  • Multi-Use Trail System Easy
    RV parking available

Schodack Island offers several miles of mostly flat multi-use trails along the Hudson River and Schodack Creek, suitable for hiking, jogging, and cycling. The wide gravel paths follow former railroad and farm corridors, making them accessible for casual walkers and families. Trailhead parking accommodates passenger vehicles and small to mid-size RVs.

  • Kayak and Canoe Launch Moderate
    RV parking available

A hand-carry launch provides paddler access to the Hudson River and Schodack Creek for flatwater touring and wildlife viewing. The protected creek side is a calmer option when the main river channel is busy with boat traffic. Bring your own boat, as rentals are not on site.

  • Hudson River Fishing
    RV parking available

Anglers can fish from the shoreline for striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, and panfish in season. A valid New York State fishing license is required, and tidal Hudson regulations apply. Several pull-offs along the park road offer easy bank access.

  • Bird Conservation Area Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The park is designated a New York State Bird Conservation Area and supports bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, and migrating waterfowl. Spring and fall migration periods are most productive, with viewing along the river and creek edges. Bring binoculars, as the best vantage points are in open meadows and wetland fringes.

  • Picnicking
    RV parking available

Picnic tables are scattered through the day-use areas with views of the Hudson River and surrounding floodplain forest. Pavilion areas are available for small group gatherings. Restrooms are seasonal, so check operating status before visiting in the colder months.

  • Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing Easy

When snow cover allows, the flat trail network offers a beginner-friendly setting for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Trails are not groomed, and visitors should bring their own gear. Winter access depends on plowing and ice conditions.

  • Wildlife and Nature Photography Easy
    RV parking available

The mix of floodplain forest, tidal wetland, and open meadow makes Schodack Island a strong location for landscape and wildlife photography. Early morning and late afternoon light along the Hudson River are particularly rewarding. Stay on designated trails to protect sensitive habitat.

How to get to Schodack Island State Park

The park entrance is off Schodack Landing Road, accessed from Route 9J along the Hudson River. Albany is about 15 miles north, roughly a 25 minute drive, and Hudson is about 20 miles south. Travelers in larger rigs should approach via Interstate 90 to U.S. Route 9 and then 9J rather than narrower local roads, and watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses common along the riverside route. Albany International Airport (ALB) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips, about 25 to 30 minutes away.
