Best time to visit Second Peninsula Provincial Park

Late June through early September is the most comfortable window, with warm coastal temperatures, calm bay conditions, and long daylight hours for picnicking and swimming. July and August bring the warmest water but also the busiest weekends, especially during local festivals in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. Shoulder months of May, early June, and September offer cooler air, thinner crowds, and easier parking for larger RVs on narrow peninsula roads. Late fall and winter visits are possible for day use, but services are minimal and coastal weather can be raw.

Things to do at Second Peninsula Provincial Park

  • Shoreline picnicking Easy
    RV parking available

Picnicking along the Mahone Bay shoreline is the park's main draw. Tables are set among trees with views over the water, making it an easy midday stop between Lunenburg and Mahone Bay.

  • Beach and swimming access Easy

Visitors can reach the park's rocky and gravel beach for wading, cold-water swimming, and tidepool exploring. The bay here is relatively sheltered compared with the open Atlantic coast, but there are no lifeguards on duty.

  • Short coastal walking Easy

Short informal walking paths lead through the wooded headland to lookout points along the shore. The terrain is gentle and suitable for most visitors.

  • Birdwatching and wildlife viewing Easy

The mixed Acadian forest and bay frontage attract seabirds, shorebirds, and songbirds, especially during spring and fall migration. Bring binoculars for views across the bay.

  • Day trip to Old Town Lunenburg Easy
    RV parking available

Old Town Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 10 to 15 minutes away by road. Its colourful waterfront, Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and historic streets make an easy pairing with a picnic at Second Peninsula.

  • Drive to Mahone Bay Easy
    RV parking available

The town of Mahone Bay, known for its trio of waterfront churches and craft shops, is a short drive north. It offers additional dining, provisioning, and harbour views that complement a day at the park.

  • Photography along the bay

The peninsula offers photogenic views of Mahone Bay's islands, small fishing wharves, and classic Nova Scotia coastline. Early morning and late afternoon light are best for shoreline shots.

Thank you for a wonderful RV rental experience! We had no prior experience with renting an RV, but the process was made so easy that we could simply focus on enjoying our family visit. Since we live outside the city, the RV was the perfect solution for hosting overnight guests. The pictures were accurate, the RV was exactly as described, and everything went smoothly. We truly appreciate how seamless and stress-free our first rental experience was—thank you again!

How to get to Second Peninsula Provincial Park

The park sits on Second Peninsula Road, reached from Highway 3 near Lunenburg, about a 10 to 15 minute drive from downtown Lunenburg and roughly 90 minutes (about 100 km) southwest of Halifax via Highway 103. Mahone Bay is about 20 minutes to the north, and Bridgewater about 25 minutes west. RV drivers should note that the access road onto the peninsula is a narrow rural route with tight curves, limited shoulders, and no turnaround areas at the park itself, so large Class A motorhomes and long trailers should scout ahead. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ).
