Best time to visit Snowdale State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly April to October, is the most popular window, with warm temperatures and full access to swimming, boating, and fishing on Lake Hudson. May and June bring green scenery and active fishing but also thunderstorms, so RVers should watch weather forecasts. July and August are hot and humid, with peak weekend use around holidays. September and October offer cooler nights, fewer crowds, and comfortable driving conditions, making them strong shoulder-season picks for RV travel.

Things to do at Snowdale State Park

  • Fishing on Lake Hudson Easy
    RV parking available

Lake Hudson is known for striped bass, white bass, crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass fishing from the shoreline or by boat. Snowdale's lakefront access makes it a practical base for anglers. Early morning and evening are the most productive times in summer.

  • Boating and water sports Easy
    RV parking available

The park provides boat ramp access to Lake Hudson, a long and narrow reservoir on the Grand River system. Visitors launch for waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and pontoon cruising. RV-accessible parking is typically available near the ramp.

  • Swimming and lakeside picnicking Easy
    RV parking available

Snowdale has shoreline and grassy areas suited for swimming and picnicking in warm months. Shaded picnic sites with tables and grills are scattered through the park. Standard lake-swimming precautions apply as there are no lifeguards.

  • Wildlife and bird watching Easy
    RV parking available

The oak and hickory woodlands around Lake Hudson support songbirds, waterfowl, bald eagles in winter, and white-tailed deer. Quiet lakeside mornings are best for observation. Binoculars are recommended.

  • Day trip to Grand Lake o' the Cherokees Easy
    RV parking available

Grand Lake, upstream of Lake Hudson, is a major recreation hub within a 30 to 40 minute drive. The surrounding area offers marinas, restaurants, and additional state park sites. It is a practical half-day outing from a Snowdale base camp.

  • Visit to Pensacola Dam Easy
    RV parking available

Pensacola Dam, which forms Grand Lake just upstream, is the longest multiple-arch dam in the world and a notable engineering landmark in northeast Oklahoma. A driving tour and overlook area are nearby. It pairs well with a Lake Hudson day on the water.

  • Evening campfire and stargazing Easy
    RV parking available

Rural Mayes County has darker skies than the Tulsa metro, making campsite stargazing enjoyable on clear nights. Bring a star chart or app for summer constellations. Follow posted fire rules and any seasonal burn bans.

How to get to Snowdale State Park

Snowdale State Park is located on Lake Hudson near Salina in Mayes County, Oklahoma, roughly an hour northeast of Tulsa by way of US-412 and State Highway 20, a drive of about 60 miles. From Oklahoma City the trip is about 3 hours, and from Joplin, Missouri, it is approximately 90 minutes south via US-59 and US-60. Roads in the area are rural two-lane highways with some rolling grades and narrow shoulders, so RVers should use caution on smaller county connectors and watch for low-clearance rail crossings. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Tulsa International Airport (TUL).
