Sowchea Bay Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park is located only 20 km from Fort St. James, reached via Sowchea Bay Road off Highway 27. From Prince George, expect roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive of about 175 km north on Highway 97 and then Highway 27. The final approach is gravel and the former Forest Service layout is not BC Parks standard, so larger RVs may have difficulty maneuvering; drive slowly and scout sites before committing. Prince George Airport (YXS) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.
Late June through August is the best window for RV travel, with warm days, long daylight hours, and reliable access on the gravel approach road. July and early August offer the warmest lake temperatures for swimming, paddling, and waterskiing, but also the busiest weekends with anglers and boaters. Early June and early September are quieter shoulder periods, though nights turn cold quickly in this interior region. Winter travel is not practical as the campground is outside the operating season.

Sowchea Bay's campground sits right on Stuart Lake, offering waterfront sites for RV travellers. The park was formerly a forestry campsite, and the majority of campsites are right next to the water. Expect a rustic feel with limited amenities. bcparks.ca/sowchea-bay-park/
Stuart Lake is a productive fishery accessed directly from the park's boat launch. Anglers enjoy fishing for char and rainbow trout, and anyone fishing in British Columbia must have an appropriate licence. bcparks.ca/sowchea-bay-park/
Paddlers can launch directly from the campground into sheltered bay waters. There are canoeing and kayaking opportunities at this park. Calm mornings are best before afternoon winds build on the open lake. bcparks.ca/sowchea-bay-park/
Stuart Lake's long open reaches suit motorised water sports and wind-driven activities. There are waterskiing and windsurfing opportunities in this park. bcparks.ca/sowchea-bay-park/
Paarens Beach is the nearest full day-use area and makes an easy side trip for swimming and picnicking. There is no day-use area at Sowchea Bay Park, so visitors use facilities at Paarens Beach Park, just 5 km east on Sowchea Bay Road.
The historic fur trade post is a short drive from the park and tells the story of the region's early European settlement. The North West Company merged with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821, and in 1822 they named the settlement Fort St. James, once the economic capital of the colony of New Caledonia.
The Stuart Lake area supports a wide range of large mammals for respectful observation from a distance. Moose and black bear are plentiful, and other more secretive species include mule and white-tail deer, wolf, and grizzly bear. Store food securely in the RV. bcparks.ca/sowchea-bay-park/
