Sowchea Bay Provincial Park, BC, Canada

How to get to Sowchea Bay Provincial Park

The park is located only 20 km from Fort St. James, reached via Sowchea Bay Road off Highway 27. From Prince George, expect roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive of about 175 km north on Highway 97 and then Highway 27. The final approach is gravel and the former Forest Service layout is not BC Parks standard, so larger RVs may have difficulty maneuvering; drive slowly and scout sites before committing. Prince George Airport (YXS) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.

Best time to visit Sowchea Bay Provincial Park

Late June through August is the best window for RV travel, with warm days, long daylight hours, and reliable access on the gravel approach road. July and early August offer the warmest lake temperatures for swimming, paddling, and waterskiing, but also the busiest weekends with anglers and boaters. Early June and early September are quieter shoulder periods, though nights turn cold quickly in this interior region. Winter travel is not practical as the campground is outside the operating season.

The historic fur trade post is a short drive from the park and tells the story of the region's early European settlement.
