April through June and September through early November are the most comfortable months, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and clear trail conditions for walking the earthworks and riverside paths. Summer visits are possible but bring heat, humidity, and biting insects along the river bottomlands. Winter is mild by regional standards and offers the clearest views of earthworks through leafless woods, though occasional cold snaps and brief ice events can affect access. Shoulder seasons also see fewer visitors, making it easier for RVers to find parking near the visitor centers.
Cold but rarely snowy; trails open, best for earthwork views through bare trees.
Cool and variable; quiet season for history-focused visits.
Mild spring days; occasional heavy rain.
Prime season for trails and wildflowers.
Warm and green; start of tick and mosquito season.
Anniversary of the June battle; special programs may be offered.
Hot and humid; afternoon thunderstorms common.
Heat and humidity peak; carry water on riverside trails.
Comfortable days; great shoulder-season visit.
Fall color along the Roanoke River; very popular weekends.
Cool, clear days and easy walking on the earthwork trails.
Short daylight hours; confirm visitor center winter hours before arrival.
This self-guided walk follows Confederate earthworks on the Halifax County side of the river where Home Guards defended the railroad bridge. Interpretive signs explain troop positions, the June 1864 engagement, and the significance of the crossing to Confederate supply lines.
Small museums on each side of the river display exhibits on the battle, the Richmond & Danville Railroad, and the home-front defenders. They provide orientation, restrooms, and trail maps for both units of the park.
A pedestrian crossing on the historic rail alignment links the Charlotte and Halifax sides of the park. The flat, level path offers river views and is accessible for most walkers.
The park provides river access for shoreline fishing for bass, catfish, and sunfish, with a Virginia freshwater license required. The riparian corridor is good for spotting herons, bald eagles, deer, and songbirds.
Shaded picnic tables near the river make a convenient midday stop during a battlefield tour. Large-vehicle parking is available at the main lots, and RVers can stage for nearby driving tours of the region.
About 25 miles east near Scottsburg, the separate Staunton River State Park offers campgrounds, cabins, swimming, and boating on Buggs Island Lake. It is a popular base for RVers wanting to combine battlefield touring with overnight stays.
Staunton River Bridge was a key target of the Wilson-Kautz Raid, dispatched from the Petersburg lines to disrupt Confederate rail communications. Drivers can connect related sites between Petersburg and the battlefield in a single RV-friendly road trip.

Staunton River Battlefield State Park, VA, United States
The park sits in rural Southside Virginia about 25 miles east of South Boston, roughly 90 minutes (about 75 miles) south of Lynchburg, and approximately 2 hours 15 minutes southwest of Richmond via US-360. Most access routes are two-lane rural highways with narrow shoulders, low rural railroad underpasses, and a few tight turns near the river, so drivers of longer Class A and fifth-wheel rigs should plan the final approach carefully and avoid unverified shortcuts. There are no mountain passes or tunnels to worry about, but secondary roads can be rough and unlit at night. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent RV trips are Raleigh-Durham (RDU), about 2 hours south, and Richmond International (RIC), about 2 hours 15 minutes northeast.
