Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, is the best window for RV visits, when the summit road is open, daytime temperatures are comfortable, and the Palouse hills turn vivid green and gold. June is a highlight for wildflowers and the freshest green patchwork of crops, while late July and August showcase the classic golden harvest colors. Shoulder months of April and October can bring dramatic light and smaller crowds, but winds and cold snaps are common. Winter travel is limited, as snow and ice can close or make the summit road hazardous.

A paved spiral road winds about three miles from the base to the top of Steptoe Butte. The summit offers 360-degree views across the Palouse farmland and, on clear days, toward the Blue Mountains and distant peaks in Idaho. The road is narrow and steep, so smaller vehicles are best suited for the climb.
Steptoe Butte is considered one of the premier photography viewpoints in the Pacific Northwest. Sunrise and sunset light sculpts the rolling wheat fields into patterns of shadow and gold, drawing photographers from around the region. Several pullouts along the summit road provide tripod-friendly vantage points.
Picnic tables are set near the top of the butte with open views in every direction. It is a popular spot for a packed lunch after the drive up, with interpretive panels explaining the area's geology and history. Bring water and wind layers, as the summit is exposed.
Short informal walks around the base and lower slopes of the butte showcase native grasses, spring wildflowers, and birds of prey riding the thermals. Raptors including hawks and kestrels are frequently seen soaring near the summit. Stick to established paths to protect sensitive vegetation.
With minimal light pollution across the surrounding farmland, the summit is a strong spot for stargazing on clear nights. The park is day-use, so plan to arrive before the gate closes at dusk or confirm current access hours. Bring warm layers even in summer, as temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
Kamiak Butte, about 25 miles south near Palouse, offers a forested hiking trail to a ridgeline overlook and complements a Steptoe Butte visit. The Pine Ridge Trail climbs roughly 3.5 miles round trip with panoramic Palouse views. A small campground at Kamiak provides an overnight option for RVers exploring the area.
Colfax is the closest town and a convenient base for fuel, groceries, and RV supplies. The Palouse Scenic Byway links Steptoe Butte with other regional highlights including Palouse Falls State Park to the southwest. The drive showcases classic rolling hill country and small farm communities.

This is a beautiful JAYCO trailer, well-stocked with towels, blankets, everyday utensils and other amenities; too many to list here. Cory has a very helpful "how-to" video. You will enjoy working with Cory, who is flexible and easy to work with. We had a delightful stay.

Steptoe Butte State Park, WA, United States
The park sits off U.S. Highway 195 in eastern Washington, about 12 miles north of Colfax and roughly 55 miles or about one hour south of Spokane, with Pullman about 30 miles south. From the highway, drivers turn east onto Scholz Road and then follow signs through Steptoe village to the park entrance. The summit spiral road is paved but narrow, steep, and winding with tight switchbacks and no guardrails in places, so very long motorhomes and trailers should consider unhitching or parking at the base rather than attempting the drive to the top. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Spokane International Airport (GEG).
