Late May through early October is the most comfortable window, with green forest, accessible trails, and warm enough weather for paddling Straight and Rainbow lakes. September and early October bring fall color across the hardwoods along with fewer bugs and cooler hiking temperatures. Spring can be muddy and buggy, and winter turns the interior roads and trails into snow-covered routes best suited to skis or snowshoes rather than vehicles.
Deep winter; interior park roads snow covered, no vehicle camping
Cold and snowy; ski and snowshoe access only
Late winter; trails can be icy or slushy

A section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail runs through Straight Lake State Park, offering miles of footpath across glacial moraines, kettles, and mixed forest. Hikers can complete out-and-back day hikes from the trailhead or link to adjacent segments for longer trips.
Straight Lake is managed as a primitive park with backpack-in campsites rather than drive-in RV loops. Sites are reserved through the Wisconsin State Park System and reached on foot from the trailhead parking area.
The park's two main lakes are quiet, undeveloped waters well suited to kayaks, canoes, and small hand-launched boats. Access is carry-in only, so plan for a short portage from the parking area.
Straight Lake and Rainbow Lake support warmwater fisheries typical of northwestern Wisconsin, including bass and panfish. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required and state regulations apply.
The mix of lakes, wetlands, and forest attracts loons, waterfowl, warblers, deer, and other northwoods wildlife. Early morning and evening along the lake edges and trail corridor are the most productive times.
In winter the park's trails and old roads are used by skiers and snowshoers exploring the quiet, snow-covered glacial terrain. Trails are ungroomed and conditions depend on recent snowfall.
Interstate State Park along the St. Croix River is a popular pairing for RV travelers staying in the Luck and St. Croix Falls area. It offers developed campgrounds, scenic river overlooks, and additional Ice Age Trail access.

Straight Lake State Park, WI, United States
The park sits in Polk County, roughly a 90 minute to two hour drive from the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro, which is also the nearest major airport hub for fly-and-rent trips. From the Twin Cities, travelers typically take I-35 north and US 8 east toward Luck, then follow county roads to the park entrance off 280th Avenue. Interior park roads are unpaved, narrow, and not designed for large motorhomes or trailers, so RVers should park at the trailhead lot and avoid taking big rigs beyond signed access points. There are no mountain passes or tunnels on the approach, but back roads can be soft in spring thaw and snow covered in winter.
