Best time to visit Sunset Bay State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best chance of sunshine on the south Oregon coast, which makes it the peak window for beach time and tidepooling. This is also the busiest period, so reservations fill months ahead. May, early June, and September are strong shoulder-season choices for RV travel with cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and easier last-minute bookings. Winter stays are possible year-round but bring frequent rain, strong coastal winds, and the chance of storm-watching conditions.

Things to do at Sunset Bay State Park

  • Sunset Bay Beach and Cove Easy
    RV parking available

The sheltered sandy cove at the heart of the park offers calm water, tidepools at low tide, and easy beach access from the day-use parking area. Sandstone cliffs on either side create a protected swimming and wading spot unusual for the Oregon coast.

  • Oregon Coast Trail to Shore Acres Moderate
    RV parking available

A scenic coastal hiking segment connects Sunset Bay to Shore Acres State Park along bluff-top headlands. The route offers ocean views, wildflowers in season, and access to hidden coves.

  • Shore Acres State Park Gardens and Viewpoint Easy
    RV parking available

Located a short drive south on Cape Arago Highway, Shore Acres features formal gardens, a glass-enclosed observation building, and dramatic wave-watching cliffs. It is a popular day trip for Sunset Bay campers.

  • Cape Arago State Park Lookout Easy
    RV parking available

At the end of Cape Arago Highway, this cliff-top viewpoint overlooks Simpson Reef and Shell Island, home to one of the largest haul-outs of sea lions and harbor seals on the Oregon coast. Benches and paved paths make it an easy stop for RVers.

  • Big Creek and Campground Loop Walks Easy
    RV parking available

Short interpretive and connector trails wind through the campground and along Big Creek between the day-use area and campsites. They are suitable for all ages and a convenient leg-stretch from an RV site.

  • Tidepooling at Low Tide Easy
    RV parking available

Rocky ledges at the edges of Sunset Bay expose sea stars, anemones, crabs, and other marine life during negative low tides. Check a tide chart before heading down and wear grippy footwear on slick rocks.

  • Bastendorff Beach and Coos Bay Day Trip Easy
    RV parking available

Nearby Bastendorff Beach offers a wider stretch of sand and a long jetty view, while downtown Coos Bay and Charleston provide groceries, seafood restaurants, and RV supply options. Both are within a 15-minute drive.

How to get to Sunset Bay State Park

The park sits on Cape Arago Highway roughly 12 miles southwest of Coos Bay and about 15 minutes from U.S. Highway 101. From Eugene, plan on about a 2.5-hour drive south on I-5 and west on Highway 38 and 101, while Portland is roughly 4.5 hours and the California border about 3 hours south on 101. Cape Arago Highway is paved and RV-accessible but includes narrow shoulders, tight curves, and short steep grades near Shore Acres and Cape Arago, so drivers of longer rigs should take it slow and watch for oncoming traffic. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (OTH) in North Bend, about 15 miles from the park.
