Best time to visit Sylvan Lake State Park

Late June through early September is the prime window, when Brush Creek Road is reliably clear, campgrounds are fully open, and daytime highs in the mountains are pleasant. July and August bring peak visitation and afternoon thunderstorms, so early-morning arrivals help with site selection. Shoulder weeks in late May and September can be beautiful but cold at night, and snow may linger on the access road into early summer. Winter visits are for day use or self-contained rigs only, since the upper road is not plowed to the lake.

Things to do at Sylvan Lake State Park

  • Fishing Sylvan Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Sylvan Lake is a stocked trout fishery open to non-motorized and electric-motor boating, ideal for anglers after rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout. Shoreline access is easy from the day-use areas and both campgrounds. A small boat ramp serves canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/SylvanLake

  • Sylvan Lake Loop Trail Easy
    RV parking available

This easy interpretive loop circles the entire lake on mostly level ground, suitable for families and casual walkers. The path offers reflective mountain views, meadows, and fishing access points throughout. cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/SylvanLake

  • Crooked Creek Pass Drive Moderate

A scenic backcountry drive climbs south from the park over Crooked Creek Pass toward Ruedi Reservoir, crossing meadows and aspen groves in the White River National Forest. The route is usually maintained by Eagle County as far south as Sylvan Lake, but 4WD is recommended beyond that point since snowpack can linger on the road. Best for tow vehicles or side-by-sides rather than RVs. fs.usda.gov/r02/whiteriver/recreation/crooked-creek-pass-sylvan-lake

  • Paddling and Non-Motorized Boating Easy
    RV parking available

Sylvan Lake is wakeless, making it a calm venue for canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and small rowboats. Electric trolling motors are permitted, while gas motors are not. Launch is a short walk from day-use parking. cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/SylvanLake

  • Wildlife Viewing and Photography Easy
    RV parking available

The meadows and forest edges around the lake attract elk, mule deer, moose, and a variety of birds. Early morning and dusk from the campground loops and lake trail offer the best chances. Bring binoculars and keep a respectful distance. cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/SylvanLake

  • Winter Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing Moderate

Once the access road closes to vehicles, the park area becomes a quiet winter recreation zone. Sylvan Lake is popular for ski touring, snowmobiling, and ice fishing, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities in the surrounding area. Day-use only in winter; RVs should stage in Eagle. fs.usda.gov/r02/whiteriver/recreation/crooked-creek-pass-sylvan-lake

  • White River National Forest Hiking Moderate
    RV parking available

Trails leading from near the park enter the surrounding White River National Forest, climbing through aspen stands and spruce-fir forest toward higher lakes and ridgelines. Expect quick elevation gain above 8,500 feet and carry rain gear for afternoon storms. fs.usda.gov/r02/whiteriver/recreation/crooked-creek-pass-sylvan-lake

The LoveTravelFilm bus was perfect for my partner, our puppy and me. It has character, charm and comfort. Julian and Amber thought about everything. Every nook and cranny has a purpose. It has a full window AC unit, solar, and all the pots and pans and running water you need. Plus the top deck for star gazing! They've got you covered to go off grid or pull into a campsite. One stop shop in style and they were super responsive and helpful! We had a blast and would highly recommend.

Great bus for adventure travelers! We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the RV exploring the mountains around Avon. The bus has everything you need for camping and Julian and Amber were great hosts! The vehicle can be a little quirky - we had to be patient and work through a few mechanical issues along the way - but the overall experience was well worth it!

How to get to Sylvan Lake State Park

The park sits south of the town of Eagle, about 30 miles west of Vail and roughly 140 miles west of Denver via I-70. This road is usually maintained by Eagle County as far south as Sylvan Lake, but 4WD is still recommended for the last 4.4 miles since it may still have snowpack.
