Late May through mid-October is the prime window, when the campground at Copake Falls is open and trails are clear of snow. June and September offer warm days, cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lighter crowds than midsummer weekends. Early October brings peak fall foliage across the Taconic ridge and is one of the most scenic times to visit, though weekend sites book up quickly. Winter access is limited to day use, with most facilities closed and trails often snow covered.

Bash Bish Falls is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Massachusetts, accessed via a moderate trail from the Taconic State Park trailhead on Falls Road. The route climbs about three quarters of a mile to a viewing platform over the two-tier cascade. Parking at the Taconic trailhead accommodates vehicles and is typically the best choice for larger rigs.
The South Taconic Trail runs along the ridgeline above the park and delivers open summit views across the Hudson Valley. Popular segments reach Alander Mountain and Sunset Rock, both strenuous day hikes with significant elevation gain. Trailheads are accessible from the Copake Falls area.
Ore Pit Pond is a spring-fed swimming area at the Copake Falls section, created from a former iron ore mining pit. It offers a sandy beach, lifeguards in season, and a shallow area suited to families. The day-use lot is within walking distance of the campground.
The Copake Iron Works preserves the remains of a 19th-century blast furnace and ironmaking community inside the park. Self-guided interpretive signs and a seasonal museum explain the site's role in regional industry. Parking is near the main day-use area.
Rudd Pond is a separate section of Taconic State Park near Millerton with a beach, boat launch, fishing, and additional campsites. It is a quieter alternative to Copake Falls for swimming and paddling. The access road handles standard RVs without difficulty.
Bash Bish Brook runs through the Copake Falls section and is stocked with trout each spring. Anglers need a valid New York State fishing license and can access the stream from several pullouts along Route 344. Waders are recommended for the rockier stretches.
Sunset Rock is a popular overlook on the South Taconic ridge with sweeping views west over Copake and the Catskills. The climb from the park gains roughly 1,000 feet over a few miles of rocky trail. It is a rewarding half-day hike for experienced walkers.

My son and I stayed in this camper for a long weekend in the Catskills. It was perfect, and exactly what we were looking for. We will definitely be staying in it every year for this event!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience renting this small camper! It was immaculate—spotless, fresh, and perfectly maintained. As first-time campers, we were a little nervous, but Krystal’s wonderful communication made everything so easy. Krystal & Greg went above and beyond by personally setting up our sewer and water connections, which was incredibly helpful and reassuring. Their kindness and attention to detail made our trip stress-free and so enjoyable. Highly recommend renting from them—you won’t be disappointed!

Taconic State Park, NY, United States
The Copake Falls area sits off NY Route 344, just west of the Massachusetts line and about 2.5 hours (110 miles) north of New York City via the Taconic State Parkway and NY Route 23. Albany is roughly 1 hour to the north (50 miles), and Hartford, Connecticut is about 1.5 hours (60 miles) to the southeast. RV drivers should note that the Taconic State Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles and trucks, so larger motorhomes and trailers typically route via the New York State Thruway (I-87) to I-90 and NY Route 22; the final approach on Route 344 is a winding two-lane road with some grades. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Albany International Airport (ALB), with Bradley International (BDL) near Hartford as an alternative.
