Best time to visit Tar Hollow State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with warm days, open campgrounds, and full access to the swim beach and boat rentals. September and October are especially popular for the fall color across the hardwood ridges, though weekends fill quickly. Summer brings humidity, biting insects, and occasional thunderstorms, so early mornings and shoulder months are easier for hiking. Winter is quiet and many services scale back, but the forest roads and hollows can be icy and should be approached with caution in a larger rig.

Things to do at Tar Hollow State Park

  • Logan Trail Strenuous

The Logan Trail is a long backcountry loop that winds through Tar Hollow State Forest with options for shorter day hikes and an overnight backpack. It climbs several ridges and drops into deep hollows, making it one of the more challenging hikes in south-central Ohio. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles; larger rigs should stage at the main campground day-use area.

  • Pine Lake fishing and boating Easy
    RV parking available

Pine Lake is a small electric-motor-only lake stocked for bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish. Anglers can fish from shore or launch a small boat or kayak at the park ramp. A valid Ohio fishing license is required.

  • Pine Lake swim beach Easy
    RV parking available

A seasonal unguarded swim beach sits on the shore of Pine Lake with sand, a grassy lawn, and nearby picnic areas. It is a popular cool-down spot on hot summer afternoons. Change houses and restrooms are available during the summer season.

  • Ross Hollow Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Ross Hollow Trail is a moderate loop that leaves from the campground area and climbs into the forested hills above Pine Lake. The trail passes through mixed hardwoods and pines typical of the Appalachian foothills. It is well signed and a good option for an afternoon hike from camp.

  • Brush Ridge Fire Tower Easy

The historic fire tower on Brush Ridge in Tar Hollow State Forest offers a view over the surrounding ridges on clear days. It is reached by a forest road drive followed by a short walk. The narrow access roads are not recommended for large motorhomes or trailers.

  • Picnicking and day use Easy
    RV parking available

Multiple picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters are scattered near Pine Lake and the campground. Several sites have pull-through parking that works for tow vehicles and smaller RVs. Shelters can be reserved for group outings.

  • Mountain biking and bridle trails Moderate

Tar Hollow State Forest maintains bridle and multi-use trails that are open to mountain biking in designated sections. Routes follow old logging roads and ridge lines through the forest. Check current trail conditions and closures with the state forest office before riding.

How to get to Tar Hollow State Park

Tar Hollow State Park sits off State Route 327 between Laurelville and Londonderry in south-central Ohio. From Chillicothe the drive is roughly 20 miles and about 30 minutes, from Columbus it is about 60 miles and 75 minutes south via US-23 and SR-180, and from Cincinnati it is roughly 110 miles east. The approach roads are narrow, hilly, and winding with tight curves and steep grades inside the forest, so larger RVs and towables should take it slow, avoid shortcuts through the state forest fire roads, and watch for low branches.
