Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the best window to visit. Summer brings warm temperatures ideal for hiking the Indian Ladder Trail and using the pool, while September and October deliver cooler air, fewer crowds, and vivid foliage along the escarpment. The Indian Ladder Trail itself is seasonal, typically open May 1 to November 15, and closes in winter due to ice and rockfall hazards, so shoulder-season RV travelers should confirm trail status before arriving. Winter visits suit cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the upper trails when snow cover allows.

The Indian Ladder Trail is the park's signature half-mile path that traverses the base of the 100-foot Helderberg Escarpment cliff. Hikers pass beneath layered limestone, see fossils in the rock face, and walk behind Mine Lot Falls. The trail is seasonal and typically closed in winter due to ice. nps.gov/articles/000/paleontology-and-geology-of-john-boyd-thacher-state-park-nnl.htm
Pull-offs along the main park drive provide sweeping views over the Hudson and Mohawk valleys. On clear days the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Green Mountains can be visible from the cliff edge.
The nature center, located near Thompsons Lake, introduces the geology, ecology, and human history of the Helderberg Escarpment through exhibits and interpretive programs. It is a useful first stop to orient an RV trip and check current trail conditions.
More than 25 miles of multi-use trails wind across the plateau above the cliffs, including a section of the Long Path. Routes are open to hiking and mountain biking in summer and to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
Paint Mine offers picnic tables, grills, and shaded lawns set back from the cliff edge, along with access to nearby trail loops. The large parking area accommodates day-use RVs.
The seasonal swimming pool and adjoining playground sit near a popular family overlook. Both are open in summer and offer a cooling break from hiking in the heat.
Thacher is a National Natural Landmark recognized for its uniquely accessible, fossil-rich Middle Paleozoic deposits. Marine invertebrate fossils such as brachiopods, crinoids, and corals are visible in the limestone exposed along the Indian Ladder Trail. nps.gov/articles/000/paleontology-and-geology-of-john-boyd-thacher-state-park-nnl.htm
We had an incredible experience. The rig was very clean and organized. Josh was very accommodating and fluid with our requests. 10-10 would do again

Josh is a great host, very flexible and responsive. The RV is in pristine condition, clean and everything works perfectly. We went on a few scenic road trips and it drove beautifully. Wonderful experience and we would certainly rent it again, highly recommend, thanks Josh!

The camper was clean, comfortable and was perfect for what was needed. They are very accommodating as Greg had to delivery one to a location almost two hours away one way. Then had to turn around and drop off to me which is around an hour. Every thing went smoothly, the generator starts on first pull and was great on gas. We were happy to have the camper on Thursday as it poured for part of the night. In the past when it rained we were in a tent. It was nice to be able to take a shower to get the dust off of me and sweat. Bed is super comfortable and the ac worked well but we only used it for a short time. All in all it was a great experience dealing with them. Will be looking forward to using them again next year.

My son and I stayed in this camper for a long weekend in the Catskills. It was perfect, and exactly what we were looking for. We will definitely be staying in it every year for this event!

Thacher State Park, NY, United States
From Albany, the park is about a 25 to 30 minute drive west via Route 85 and Route 157, roughly 12 miles. From Schenectady it is about 45 minutes, and from New York City roughly 3 hours via I-87. Route 157 climbs the Helderberg Escarpment with a steep, winding grade that RV drivers should approach cautiously, especially in wet or icy conditions, and large rigs may prefer the gentler approach via Route 156 from Altamont. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Albany International Airport, about 20 miles northeast.
