Late spring through early fall is the prime window, with May, June, and September offering warm days, cooler nights, and lighter crowds than midsummer. July and August bring peak boating weather but also the busiest campgrounds and the hottest high-desert temperatures, so reservations well in advance are essential. Shoulder seasons are ideal for RVers who want hookups without the heat, though wind on the lake can be stronger in spring. Winters are cold with occasional snow, and most services wind down outside the main season.
Cold, occasional snow; limited winter camping.
Cool and dry; quiet shoulder period.
Windy days common on the lake.
Campgrounds reopening for the season.
Pleasant shoulder-season weather.
Warming up; reservations fill fast.
Peak season; hot and very busy.
Peak boating; watch for fire restrictions.
Warm days, cool nights, thinner crowds.
Cool fall camping; limited services late month.
Most amenities reduced; day-use continues.
Cold with possible snow; reduced services.
Lake Billy Chinook is the park's centerpiece reservoir, with developed ramps and a marina for powerboats, houseboats, and paddlecraft. The lake has 72 miles of shoreline surrounding 3,916 acres with an average depth of 102 feet and a maximum depth of 415 feet. A 10 mph speed limit applies in each of the lake arms above the bridges. fs.usda.gov/r06/ochoco/recreation/lake-billy-chinook
The Tam-a-láu Trail is the park's signature hike, climbing from the Deschutes River Campground to the rim of The Peninsula plateau. The trail starts with a short, moderately steep climb to the top of a lava plateau called The Peninsula, then continues around most of the rim for about 4.3 miles, offering fantastic views of Lake Billy Chinook, the Deschutes and Crooked Rivers. Parking is available in the parking lot and can accommodate a variety of vehicle sizes. fs.usda.gov/r06/ochoco/recreation/trails/tam-lau-trail-856
Lake Billy Chinook is one of central Oregon's top fisheries, accessible from shore and boat. The lake holds largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow, brown and bull trout, kokanee salmon, whitefish, and a handful of suckers, minnows and dace. A valid Oregon fishing license is required, and the Metolius arm is open to angling only from March 1 to October 31. fs.usda.gov/r06/ochoco/recreation/lake-billy-chinook
Designated swim areas along Lake Billy Chinook at the park's day-use areas offer a cool break from high-desert summer heat. The Deschutes and Crooked River day-use areas both provide lake access with beach-style entry. Day-use parking accommodates trucks and tow vehicles.
Steady canyon winds make Lake Billy Chinook a draw for wind-powered sports and open-water paddling. Kayakers, canoers, and paddleboarders can explore the three river arms from launches near the marina. Launches near the marina provide easy water access. fs.usda.gov/r06/ochoco/recreation/lake-billy-chinook
Pullouts and overlooks along the road up to The Peninsula deliver sweeping views of the three river arms meeting at the lake. At the far end of The Peninsula, hikers can see across the water to an area called The Island, which was designated a natural national landmark and has been off limits to hikers since 1997 in order to protect its fragile native ecosystem. fs.usda.gov/r06/ochoco/recreation/trails/tam-lau-trail-856
The canyon environment supports raptors, waterfowl, deer, and high-desert songbirds visible from trails and overlooks. Vegetation on The Peninsula consists mainly of open sage brush country with scattered western juniper. Early morning and evening provide the best viewing. fs.usda.gov/r06/ochoco/recreation/trails/tam-lau-trail-856

Had a great long weekend dry camp using Adams Four Winds. Plenty of water, propane and electricity. The add on blackstone grill was very useful

The Cove Palisades State Park, OR, United States
The park is roughly 15 miles southwest of Madras and about 45 miles north of Bend, typically a one-hour drive on US-97 and local county roads. From Culver, travel southwest on Culver Highway, turn right onto SW Gem Lane and follow it as it becomes Frazier Drive, then turn right onto Forest Service Road 63 (Jordan Road) and stay on it for about 5.8 miles. RVers should note the steep, winding grade descending into the canyon to reach the campgrounds and marina, so drivers of long rigs should use low gears and check brakes before the descent. Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) is the closest airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 40 miles south.
