Best time to visit Thomas Raddall Provincial Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest weather, open campground services, and the best ocean swimming conditions. July and August are peak season with busy weekends, so midweek arrivals are easier for larger RVs. The shoulder weeks of mid-June and September bring fewer crowds, cooler nights, and strong fall colour along the coastal trails, though fog and coastal wind are more common. Campground services are seasonal and the park campground typically closes for winter.

Things to do at Thomas Raddall Provincial Park

  • Sandy Bay Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Sandy Bay is a long, white sand beach tucked inside Port Joli Harbour and reached by a short walk from the day-use parking area. The sheltered water and gentle slope make it popular for swimming and beachcombing. RV day-use parking is available near the trailhead.

  • Coastal Trail System Easy
    RV parking available

The park's coastal trails loop through mixed Acadian forest to rocky headlands and hidden coves along Port Joli and Port Mouton Bay. Expect wooden boardwalks, forest paths, and ocean viewpoints with interpretive signage. Footing is generally good but can be wet after rain.

  • Kejimkujik Seaside Day Trip Moderate
    RV parking available

Kejimkujik National Park Seaside sits just across Port Joli Harbour and is the closest national park unit to the campground. It is a day-use area with coastal trails to St. Catherines River Beach, known for harbour seals and piping plovers. The main trailhead has a gravel lot that accommodates tow vehicles and smaller motorhomes. parkscanada.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ns/kejimkujik

  • Sea Kayaking in Port Joli Harbour Moderate

Port Joli Harbour offers protected paddling with islands, salt marshes, and frequent seal sightings. Launch points are near the day-use area, and the sheltered bay is suitable for intermediate paddlers. Check marine forecasts as wind and fog can build quickly on the open coast.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The park and surrounding Port Joli Migratory Bird Sanctuary are among the best birding sites on the South Shore. Shorebirds, waterfowl, bald eagles, and seals are commonly seen from the coastal trails. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive.

  • Picnicking and Day Use Easy
    RV parking available

The day-use area has picnic tables, shelters, and easy access to the beach and trail network. It is a convenient base for lunch stops while exploring Queens County. Parking accommodates trucks and trailers.

  • Liverpool and Hank Snow Home Town Museum

The town of Liverpool is about 25 minutes north and offers restaurants, groceries, and cultural sites including the Hank Snow Home Town Museum and Perkins House. It is an easy side trip for rainy days. Street parking in town is tight for large rigs, so a tow vehicle or smaller RV is recommended.

How to get to Thomas Raddall Provincial Park

The park is on Nova Scotia's South Shore near Port Joli, roughly a 25 minute drive south of Liverpool via Highway 103 to Exit 21 and local routes. From Halifax it is about a 2 hour, 200 km drive west on Highway 103, and from Yarmouth it is roughly 1 hour 45 minutes east. The access road is paved but narrows near the park entrance, so drivers of larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should take the final turns slowly and watch for soft shoulders. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ).
