Best time to visit Trough Creek State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, offers the most reliable RV access with mild temperatures and open campground services. Mid-October brings vivid fall foliage in the gorge and is a favorite shoulder-season window for photographers. Summer weekends can fill quickly because of nearby Raystown Lake, so midweek stays are easier. Winter visits are possible for day use, but the campground typically closes outside the warm-weather season.

Things to do at Trough Creek State Park

  • Balanced Rock Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Balanced Rock Trail is the park's signature short hike, leading to a massive boulder perched on a sandstone ledge above Great Trough Creek. The route crosses a suspension footbridge and climbs through hemlock forest to the overlook. Trailhead parking near the picnic area can accommodate smaller RVs and tow vehicles.

  • Rainbow Falls Easy
    RV parking available

Rainbow Falls is a small but picturesque cascade tucked along the same trail system as Balanced Rock. Best viewed in spring or after rainfall when water flow is highest, the falls are reached by a short walk from the suspension bridge. The footing is rocky in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

  • Great Trough Creek Fishing
    RV parking available

Great Trough Creek and the lower park area near Raystown Lake offer trout and warmwater fishing. Anglers need a current Pennsylvania fishing license, and stocking schedules are published by the PA Fish and Boat Commission. Pull-off parking along the creek suits compact RVs and tow rigs.

  • Paradise Furnace Historic Site Easy
    RV parking available

Paradise Furnace is the remnant of a 19th-century iron furnace located within the park. Interpretive signs explain the site's role in early Pennsylvania industry. The walk from the nearby parking area is short and largely flat, making it accessible for most visitors.

  • Abbot Run Trail Moderate

Abbot Run Trail is a quiet forested route along a tributary stream, connecting with other park paths to form longer loop options. It offers solitude away from the busier Balanced Rock area. Expect a forested footpath with roots and rocks in places.

  • Ice Mine and Copperas Rock Easy

The Ice Mine is a small rock crevice that traps cold air and can hold ice into late spring, while nearby Copperas Rock is a colorful mineral-stained outcrop. Both are reached by short trails from park roads. Interpretive signage explains the unusual geology.

  • Raystown Lake Day Trip
    RV parking available

Raystown Lake, Pennsylvania's largest entirely in-state lake, is just minutes from Trough Creek and offers boating, swimming, and additional hiking. The Seven Points Recreation Area is a popular launch point. Larger paved lots there are friendlier to bigger rigs and tow vehicles.

What an incredible first experience! Tony is an outstanding host. He thoroughly went over the RV with me and communication was on point. The value matched the cost. The RV was so fun to drive. It was super clean, and very comfortable. We will be renting again for sure!

This was a great RV for our camping trip to see fall foliage. It slept our group of 3 adults and 2 children very comfortably (particularly with a slider that allowed for a soft and full queen bed), had space to socialize, play games, and warm up from the outside. The stove and oven cooked beautifully and had enough heat to power through a large meal; the water could be adjusted to very hot, which was fantastic. The bathroom was roomy enough for a shower and sink. The fridge/freezer had plenty of space and kept everything nice and cold. I can’t say enough good things about the heat, it was powerful and immediate; we ended up being in some unexpectedly frosty and windy weather but never even noticed inside. Everyone slept like babies! There is storage space in a large compartment on the outside and multiple small cabinets for things inside. The power and water hook-up is a breeze, the dumping the same. You have large windows and plenty of inside lighting. As the driver, I appreciated how large my windshield viewing area was and it handled well. The only small flaw was the cracking and flaking of the seat and armrest upholstery but that was strictly cosmetic and had no negative impact on our enjoyment. Tony was a pleasure to deal with and very responsive. A positive experience all the way around!

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to get to Trough Creek State Park

Pittsburgh is about 2.5 hours west via the Pennsylvania Turnpike and US 22, and Harrisburg is about 2 hours east. RV drivers should be prepared for narrow, winding secondary roads with steep grades and tight turns on the approach through the gorge, and should avoid oversized GPS shortcuts on unpaved forest roads. The closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is University Park Airport (SCE) near State College, with Harrisburg International (MDT) and Pittsburgh International (PIT) as larger alternatives.
