Late May through early October is the prime window, when the marina, swim beach, and campground are fully operational and daytime highs are comfortable for boating and hiking. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures but also the busiest weekends, so midweek stays are easier for RV site selection. September and early October are excellent shoulder-season choices, with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and fall color along the lake. Winter visits are quiet and scenic but most lake services close, so RVers should confirm campground status before arrival.

Boating is the park's signature activity on a long, narrow reservoir with coves and cliff views. The marina offers launches and seasonal pontoon rentals, and open water is suitable for water skiing and tubing. RVers can park trailers and tow vehicles in the marina lot during launches.
Tygart Lake is a popular warm-water fishery stocked with species including largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, and channel catfish. Anglers fish from boats, the shoreline, and the dam tailwaters below the reservoir. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required.
The park maintains a sand swimming beach on the lake with seasonal lifeguard coverage and a bathhouse. It is a short walk from day-use parking and picnic areas. Swimming is limited to designated hours and posted conditions.
The Dogwood Trail is a moderate wooded hike that climbs from the lake area through hardwood forest with seasonal wildflowers and lake glimpses. It is one of several short trails that form the park's hiking network. Trailhead parking can accommodate tow vehicles.
Tygart Dam is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers concrete gravity dam that impounds the lake and was one of the largest of its type in the East when completed. Visitors can view the dam from overlooks and, seasonally, access interpretive information about its flood-control mission. The overlook area has parking suitable for standard tow vehicles.
Shaded picnic areas with tables and grills are spread along the shoreline and near the lodge. Shelters can be reserved for larger groups. The areas are a short drive from the campground.
Seasonal pontoon sightseeing cruises depart from the marina and travel the length of the lake past sandstone cliffs to the face of Tygart Dam. The cruise is a relaxed way to see sections of shoreline that are otherwise inaccessible. Tickets and schedules are set by the marina concessionaire.

Tygart Lake State Park, WV, United States
The park sits roughly 4 miles south of Grafton, West Virginia, about a 30 minute drive from Clarksburg and a 35 to 40 minute drive from Morgantown via Interstate 79 and U.S. Route 50. Pittsburgh is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours north, and Washington, D.C. is around 4.5 to 5 hours east. RV drivers should note that the final access road descends a steep, winding grade into the lake basin with tight curves, so slow speeds and trailer brakes are advised; larger rigs should avoid shortcutting on narrow county roads. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is North Central West Virginia Airport (CKB) in Bridgeport, with Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) as the larger alternative.
