Late June through August is the peak season, with warm Lake Michigan swimming temperatures, long daylight hours, and consistent weather for beach days. September offers a quieter shoulder season with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, which is appealing for RV travelers seeking easier reservations. Spring opening in May can be cool and windy off the lake, while October brings fall color but colder water and shorter days. Weekends and holidays in summer fill quickly, so midweek stays are recommended.

The park's sandy beach is the main attraction, stretching along Lake Michigan with designated swimming areas. A bathhouse and day-use parking sit near the beach, and sunsets over the water draw crowds on summer evenings.
Short trails climb the wooded dunes between the campground and the beach. Stairways assist with the steepest sections and offer elevated views of Lake Michigan through the trees.
Picnic shelters, tables, grills, and a playground make the day-use area a family friendly stop. The open lawn areas near the beach are popular for gatherings.
The iconic red South Haven South Pier Lighthouse is about a 10 minute drive north of the park. Visitors walk the pier, explore the harbor, and browse downtown shops and restaurants.
This 34 mile rail-trail runs from South Haven to Kalamazoo and is open to cyclists, walkers, and in winter, snowmobilers. The South Haven trailhead is a short drive from the park and offers parking for vehicles.
Anglers cast from the beach for salmon, trout, and perch depending on the season. A Michigan fishing license is required, and the nearby South Haven piers offer additional access.
The wide sandy beach is ideal for collecting smooth stones and beach glass, especially after storms. The west-facing shoreline delivers reliable Lake Michigan sunsets throughout the summer.
The RV was very nice, and clean. It was well stocked with water, which was a very nice perk, towels, garbage bags, chairs, and more. I was very pleased. David was very easy to talk to, and work with.

Van Buren State Park, MI, United States
The park sits off Ruggles Road near Blue Star Highway, roughly 4 miles south of South Haven and a short drive from Interstate 196 (exit 18 or 20). Kalamazoo is about 40 miles east (around a 50 minute drive), Grand Rapids is about 65 miles northeast (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes), and Chicago is about 130 miles southwest (around 2 hours 30 minutes depending on traffic). The access roads are flat and RV friendly, with no tunnels or mountain passes, but the campground loops have tree canopy and tight turns that larger rigs should navigate slowly. Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
