Late spring through early fall, May through October, is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel to Vogel, with warm days, cool mountain nights, and full campground services. October is a signature time, as the hardwood forests across the Blue Ridge turn vivid colors and draw leaf peepers, so reservations fill quickly. June through August brings peak swim-beach and paddle boat use plus afternoon thunderstorms, while March, April, and November offer quieter shoulder-season camping with cooler temperatures and bare-tree mountain views.
Cold with occasional snow or ice at elevation; park open, services reduced.
Still cold; watch for icy mountain roads after storms.

Comfortable for hiking and lakeside camping.
Swim beach and paddle boats popular; afternoon thunderstorms.

Peak camping; reservations fill fast on weekends.
Cooler evenings, excellent hiking weather.
Blue Ridge fall foliage; reserve early.
Quieter shoulder season; bring cold-weather gear.
Cold with possible snow; park open year-round, some facilities limited.
Bear Hair Gap is a 4-mile loop hike from the Vogel trailhead climbing to an overlook of Lake Trahlyta. The trail gains significant elevation through mixed hardwood forest and is a park favorite for half-day hikers. Trailhead parking inside the park accommodates passenger vehicles and smaller tow vehicles.
The 22-acre lake is the centerpiece of the park and offers a sandy swim beach, paddle boat and kayak rentals in season, and shoreline fishing. A paved, accessible lake loop trail circles the water and is stroller and wheelchair friendly. Day-use parking is near the beach and visitor center.
Coosa Backcountry is a strenuous 12.9-mile loop climbing over Coosa Bald and Slaughter Mountain. Backpackers must register at the visitor center before setting out. The route is one of the most challenging day hikes in north Georgia and is recommended only for experienced hikers.
This family-friendly, accessible 3-mile trail begins at Vogel State Park and connects to the Byron Herbert Reece Homestead, where the poet produced an enduring body of poetry and fiction from his North Georgia home in the forested Blue Ridge mountains. The grade is gentle and the tread is suitable for most visitors. fs.usda.gov/r08/chattahoochee-oconee/recreation/trails/vogel-state-park-bh-reece-homestead-trail
Trahlyta Falls is a short walk from the park entrance area to a cascading waterfall fed by the lake outflow. The viewing platform is reached by a paved path and overlook steps. It is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the region.
Helton Creek Falls features two tiered waterfalls reached by a short trail just outside the park. From Blairsville, take US 19/129 south for 11 miles, turn left on Helton Creek Road just past the entrance to Vogel State Park, and continue 2.2 miles to a small pullout parking area with the trailhead on the right. The Helton Creek Falls Trail is an easy 0.2 mile hike with many abrupt changes in grade along the short walk. The pullout parking is small and not recommended for large motorhomes. fs.usda.gov/r08/chattahoochee-oconee/recreation/helton-creek-falls
Neel Gap, a short drive south of Vogel on US 19/129, is where the Appalachian Trail crosses the highway at Mountain Crossings. Day hikers can sample the AT heading north toward Blood Mountain or south toward Levelland Mountain. Parking is tight at the gap and better suited to tow vehicles than large RVs.
The park's small museum interprets the Civilian Conservation Corps workers who built Vogel's stone walls, bridges, and buildings in the 1930s. Exhibits are near the visitor center and lake area and take about 30 minutes to tour. It is an easy, family-friendly stop on a rainy afternoon.
David was very easy to work with and had everything ready for us upon pick up. David went over the camper with us and how to use and set it up once we arrived at our destination.
