  • Wallowa Lake Tramway to Mount Howard Easy

    The Wallowa Lake Tramway carries riders from the valley floor to the 8,150-foot summit of Mount Howard. The 15-minute tramway ride rises 3,700 feet, offering an easy means to gain the high elevations that otherwise must be ascended by a steep, strenuous hike. How to get to Wallowa Lake State Park

The park is reached from the town of Joseph, Oregon, via State Highway 82, which becomes Highway 351 south to the lake. From La Grande, Oregon, drivers follow Oregon Highway 82 about 70 miles to Joseph, roughly a 90-minute drive, then continue about 6 miles south to the park. From Boise, Idaho, the trip is approximately 4.5 hours via I-84 and Highway 82. RVers should note that the final approach on Highway 351 is a winding two-lane road along the lake with limited pullouts, and snow chains may be required in shoulder seasons. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are in Boise, Idaho, and Pasco, Washington, each about 4 hours away.
