Things to do at Walnut Point State Park

  • Fishing on Walnut Point Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Walnut Point Lake is the heart of the park and offers shoreline and boat fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and crappie. Anglers can cast from the bank, fishing piers, or small boats launched from the park ramp. A valid Illinois fishing license is required for visitors 16 and older.

  • Paddling and small-boat boating Easy
    RV parking available

The lake is restricted to electric motors and non-powered craft, making it ideal for kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats. The boat launch has trailer parking suitable for tow vehicles, and a seasonal concession may rent rowboats and paddle craft. Quiet water and tree-lined coves create a relaxed paddling experience.

  • Lake Loop and woodland trails Easy
    RV parking available

Walnut Point offers several miles of mostly flat hiking trails that wind through hardwood forest and along the lake shoreline. Trails are well-suited to families and casual hikers, with interpretive signage on local plants and wildlife. Trailheads are accessible from day-use parking areas.

  • Picnicking and day-use areas
    RV parking available

The park has multiple picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters, several of which can be reserved for groups. Shelters sit near the lake and playgrounds, making them popular for family outings. Drinking water and restrooms are available in season.

  • Wildlife and bird watching Easy
    RV parking available

The mix of lake, forest, and prairie edge attracts deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. Spring and fall migration periods are particularly rewarding for birders. Quiet morning walks around the lake loop offer the best viewing opportunities.

  • Campground stay at Walnut Point
    RV parking available

The park's campground accommodates tents, trailers, and motorhomes with a mix of electric and non-electric sites. Amenities typically include a shower building, vault and flush toilets, a sanitary dump station, and access to a camp store in season. Reservations are made through the Illinois state park reservation system.

  • Ice fishing and winter day use Moderate

When ice conditions allow, anglers can ice fish on Walnut Point Lake for panfish and bass. Winter visitors should check current park conditions, as facilities are limited and weather can change quickly. Always verify ice safety before heading out.

How to get to Walnut Point State Park

The park sits in east-central Illinois off Illinois Route 133 near Oakland, about 30 miles east of Champaign and roughly a 45-minute drive via I-57 and US Route 36. From Indianapolis it is about 2.5 hours west on I-70 and US 36, and from St. Louis about 3 hours northeast via I-70 and I-57. Roads in the area are flat rural highways with no tunnels or steep grades, but the final county road approaches are narrow, so larger rigs should take wide turns and watch for low-clearance railroad crossings. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Willard Airport (CMI) in Champaign, with Indianapolis (IND) as a larger alternative.
