Watson Mill Bridge State Park, GA, United States
The park sits in rural northeast Georgia, roughly 20 to 25 miles east of Athens and about 90 miles (around 90 minutes to two hours) northeast of Atlanta via I-85 and US-29. It is located about five miles southeast of Comer in Oglethorpe and Madison counties. Access roads are flat rural two-lane highways (GA-22 and GA-22/GA-77) with no tunnels, mountain passes, or steep grades to worry about, though some county roads narrow near the park entrance, so RVers should stay on signed state routes. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with Athens-Ben Epps Airport as a smaller regional option.
Spring (April and May) and fall (late September through early November) are the best times to visit, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and colorful scenery around the covered bridge and river shoals. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but the river shoals draw families looking to cool off. Winter is generally mild with cool nights, offering low-crowd camping and clearer views through bare hardwoods. Shoulder seasons are ideal for RV travel because campsites are easier to book and trails are less crowded.

The covered bridge is the park's signature attraction and the longest original-site covered bridge in Georgia. It is 229 feet long and built of rough sawn heart pine using the Town lattice design. Day-use parking at both ends accommodates vehicles for photos and short walks across the span.
A wide granite shoal below the historic dam is the park's most popular spot for wading, splashing, and picnicking. The early 20th-century stone dam crosses the river just below the covered bridge, and a historic raceway of stone and earth survives nearby. Paved paths lead from the main parking lot to river viewpoints.
Several miles of wooded hiking trails follow the South Fork of the Broad River and loop through Piedmont forest. The surrounding state park land includes hiking trails, campsites, and undeveloped river land. Trailheads near the main day-use area have space for tow vehicles.
The park is one of Georgia's noted horse-camping destinations, with dedicated equestrian trails and a separate horse campground. Riders bring their own stock to ride miles of rolling forest paths. Day visitors without horses can walk many of the same multi-use loops.
Anglers fish the river above and below the dam for bream, catfish, and bass. A valid Georgia fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. Bank access is easiest near the bridge and at designated river points.
The calm pool above the dam is suitable for canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Paddlers put in at the day-use area and enjoy quiet water framed by the covered bridge and wooded banks. Bring your own craft, as rentals are limited.
A short interpretive walk explores the ruins of the mill complex and power plant near the bridge. The district includes an 1885 wooden covered bridge, the site of a mill complex, an early 20th-century dam, and ruins of a power plant. Interpretive signs explain how the site once powered a cotton mill in nearby Crawford.
David's Camper is perfect for families. Its a very new camper with higher end finishes and a joy to stay in. David dropped it off in time and had it all hooked up for us when we arrived at our campsite. I highly recommend using David's camper and services and will be using again in the the future!!
