The best months to visit are October through April, when daytime temperatures are mild and the dunes are comfortable to walk. Spring (March and April) can bring strong winds and blowing sand, while summer highs frequently exceed 95 F and monsoon thunderstorms roll in during July and August. Fall offers the most stable weather, clear skies, and smaller crowds, making it ideal for RV travel. Winter is quiet and cool, with occasional light snow that quickly melts off the gypsum.

Dunes Drive is an 8-mile scenic road (paved at the start, hard-packed gypsum deeper in) that carries visitors from the visitor center into the heart of the gypsum dunefield. Large pullouts and picnic areas accommodate RVs and tow vehicles, making it the easiest way to experience the park without unhitching. nps.gov/whsa/planyourvisit/driving-dunes-drive.htm
Sand sledding on waxed plastic saucers is the signature family activity at White Sands. The best dunes for sledding are at the far end of Dunes Drive, where steep slip faces drop into open basins. RV-friendly parking is available at the Alkali Flat and Roadrunner picnic areas.
The Interdune Boardwalk is a 0.4-mile accessible elevated trail with interpretive panels on dune ecology. It is wheelchair and stroller friendly and offers big dune views without walking on sand, with trailhead parking that fits most RVs.
The Dune Life Nature Trail is a 1-mile loop through vegetated dunes on the edge of the gypsum field. Expect two short steep dune climbs and signage highlighting desert wildlife such as kit foxes and roadrunners.
Alkali Flat Trail is a 5-mile loop across the open dune field to the dry lakebed of ancient Lake Otero. Hikers should carry at least one gallon of water per person, start early, and follow the red trail markers because tracks disappear quickly in the wind. nps.gov/whsa/planyourvisit/things2do.htm
The Sunset Stroll is a ranger-led walk into the dunes as the gypsum turns pink and gold at dusk. It departs from a designated pullout on Dunes Drive that offers parking suitable for larger rigs.
The White Sands Visitor Center is a 1930s Pueblo Revival adobe complex with exhibits, a bookstore, and orientation films. A large paved lot near the entrance fits RVs and trailers and is the recommended first stop for trip planning and current missile closure updates. nps.gov/whsa/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm
White Sands offers exceptional dark-sky viewing thanks to its remote desert location and low humidity. Visitors staying for evening stargazing events can park at picnic areas along Dunes Drive until the posted closing time.

White Sands National Park, NM, United States
The park entrance sits on US Highway 70 between Alamogordo (about 15 miles, 20 minutes northeast) and Las Cruces (about 52 miles, 1 hour west). RV drivers should note that US 70 through San Augustin Pass climbs to roughly 5,700 feet with a steep grade descending toward Las Cruces, and the highway is periodically closed for up to three hours during missile tests on the adjacent range. There are no tunnels or low clearances on the approach, but high-profile rigs should watch for crosswinds across the basin. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is El Paso International Airport, about 85 miles south in Texas.
