How to get to Whitefish Dunes State Park

Whitefish Dunes State Park sits on Clark Lake Road (Cave Point Drive) in Door County, about a 15 to 20 minute drive (roughly 8 miles) from Sturgeon Bay via WIS 57 and County Road WD. From Green Bay it is about 60 miles and 75 minutes north on I-43 and WIS 57, and from Milwaukee it is about a 3.5 hour drive. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB). Roads in are paved and RV friendly with no tunnels or mountain passes, but the final county roads are narrow two-lane routes with soft shoulders, so drivers of larger rigs should take curves slowly and watch for cyclists.

Best time to visit Whitefish Dunes State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest water, longest daylight, and full access to the beach and nature center. September and early October bring cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and colorful hardwood foliage, which is ideal for RV travelers who prefer quieter trails. Spring is pleasant for hiking but Lake Michigan remains cold, and biting insects can be active near the wetlands. Winter trails are open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when conditions allow, though facilities are limited.

  • Beach walking and swimming Easy
    RV parking available

A long, sandy Lake Michigan beach stretches the length of the park and is one of the best swim beaches in Door County. Lake currents and cold water can be hazardous, so visitors should check posted conditions before entering the water.

  • Brachiopod Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Brachiopod Trail is a short, accessible interpretive loop near the nature center that highlights the dolomite bedrock and fossils of the Niagara Escarpment. It is a good option for families and travelers with limited time.

  • Nature Center exhibits Easy
    RV parking available

The park nature center features exhibits on dune ecology, archaeology of prehistoric village sites, and local wildlife. Naturalist programs are offered seasonally and serve as a trailhead orientation before hikes.

  • Hike to Cave Point County Park Easy

A forested trail links Whitefish Dunes with adjacent Cave Point County Park, where waves have carved dramatic limestone sea caves into the shoreline cliffs. The round-trip hike is flat and suitable for most fitness levels.

  • Black Trail forest loop Moderate
    RV parking available

The Black Trail is a longer wooded loop through boreal forest and wetland edges on the park's interior. It offers quieter hiking away from the busy beach corridor and good birdwatching in spring and fall.

  • Winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing Moderate
    RV parking available

When snow cover is sufficient, park trails are used for snowshoeing and classic cross-country skiing. Trails are not typically groomed, so conditions vary with weather.
