The best time to visit Whycocomagh Provincial Park is from late June through early September, when the campground is open and Cape Breton weather is warmest. July and August offer the most reliable conditions for swimming and hiking, though these are also the busiest months. Shoulder season in June and September brings fewer crowds and cooler nights, ideal for RV travellers who prefer quieter sites. The park closes for the off-season once fall weather sets in.

Salt Mountain Trail is the park's signature hike, climbing from the campground to a lookoff with sweeping views of Bras d'Or Lake. The trail is short but steep in sections, with a rocky summit. Wear sturdy footwear and allow about 1 to 2 hours round trip.
Bras d'Or Lake is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and dominates the view from the park. Picnic areas near the shore offer quiet spots to watch for bald eagles, which nest throughout the region.
The park's picnic and playground areas are family-friendly spaces within walking distance of campsites. Shaded tables and open lawns suit groups travelling by RV.
Whycocomagh is known for bald eagle sightings along the Bras d'Or shoreline. Songbirds, woodpeckers, and waterfowl are also common throughout the forested campground.
The park is a convenient base for a day drive onto the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. From Whycocomagh, the community of Baddeck on the Cabot Trail route is roughly 30 to 45 minutes away by RV.
The neighbouring We'koqma'q Mi'kmaw community offers cultural experiences, local crafts, and dining options. It sits adjacent to the park along the lake.
Bras d'Or Lake offers calm, brackish water suitable for swimming and paddling in summer. Nearby beaches and boat launches are accessible within a short drive of the park.
