Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best conditions for swimming, beachcombing, and picnicking on the dunes. July and August bring the most reliable temperatures but also the heaviest visitation during the Newfoundland summer season. Shoulder visits in June and September are quieter and good for birdwatching, though North Atlantic winds and fog can roll in quickly. The park is not suited to winter visits, when access roads and facilities are typically not maintained for recreational use.

Windmill Bight Beach is a long stretch of sand and dunes facing the North Atlantic, one of the signature features of the park. Visitors come here to walk the shoreline, comb for sea glass and driftwood, and enjoy uninterrupted ocean views.
The dunes and brackish ponds behind the beach provide habitat for shorebirds, waterfowl, and seabirds throughout the summer. Bring binoculars and walk the edges of the ponds quietly for the best sightings.
The day-use area at Windmill Bight is a popular spot for coastal picnics. Tables and shelters near the beach give families a place to relax between exploring the shoreline and the surrounding coastal communities.
Windmill Bight is a highlight of the Road to the Shore touring route on the Kittiwake Coast. RV travelers can continue north to Lumsden, Musgrave Harbour, and Cape Freels for more beaches, fishing stages, and coastal scenery.
The open Atlantic horizon and low light pollution make Windmill Bight a rewarding spot for sunrise, sunset, and night-sky photography. Late summer nights can offer clear views of stars and, occasionally, the aurora.
The sandy beach allows for shallow wading and swimming on warm summer days. Water temperatures stay cool year-round on this stretch of the North Atlantic, and there are no lifeguards on duty, so swimmers should use caution.
